SIES School of Packaging presents SOP Star Awards 2017 for excellence in packaging

Navi Mumbai-based SIES School of Packaging has instituted the Star Awards to recognize the efforts of the industry in their pursuit in Innovation, Creativity, Development and New Concepts in the field of packaging. The entries were open to all segments and sectors of packaging spread over packaging conversion, package – product – packers, supply chain and distributors, institutions, packaging machinery sector, and graphic & printing sectors, inter alia among others. The entries were classified under the categories: Flexibles, Cartons, Glass, Metals, Corrugated Fibre Board/Boxes, Labels, Product Packaging, Enviro Friendly Packaging, Ancillary Materials and Forms, Packaging Machinery & Systems, Packaging Media for Non Packaging Applications, Package Developments (Academics).

The inaugural year witnessed an overwhelming response from as many as 33 industries from different geographical locations of the country with over 160 entries. A panel of jury specialized in the field of Premedia & Printing, Export Packaging & Regulations, Food Preservation & Packaging, and Standardization and Industrial Standards, Packaging Technology evaluated the entries to adjudge those which merit the awards. The awards and certificates were presented on 20th November 2017, in an exclusive function organized at SIES Complex, Nerul in Navi Mumbai.

In message, Chief guest Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Govt of India, lauded the efforts of the SIES/ SIES SOP PTC to promote the R&D efforts of the industry as it is extremely important to constantly pursue new developments to the changing needs of the consumers and market practices. He emphasized the significance of the right packaging for exports that should meet the stringent needs both statutory and general and considerably different consumer habits. That package adds value besides preserving and protecting the contents is the realization to be clearly messaged.

Dr. V. Shankar, President, SIES, in his address outlined the evolution of packaging over the years and as to how the developments have helped the industry. He observed that every product sector such as food, pharmaceuticals, personal care and all others need packages of different types and quite a few cases they are exclusive by themselves.

Dr. V. Shankar also emphasized the transport worthiness of the shippers considering the vagaries of the climatic conditions in a tropical country like India so also the export worthiness in respect of exports where all conditions both environment and distribution practices are different. He shared with the august audience the emphasis laid down by the SIES to promote education in different faculty and the set-up of the School of Packaging in 2001 was yet another milestone to bride a gap felt by the industries. The institution of Star Awards is yet another first time effort to encourage the industries and importantly to surface out the capability and hidden talents of the packaging professionals.

P.V. Narayanan, Chairman, SIES School of Packaging, had earlier appraised the gathering the set-up and activities of the SIES SOP/PTC and its journey over the last 16 years. He shared the competence available in the field of Training, Education, Packing Audit, Package Development, Testing and QC and Specification Development besides Publication, Information & Data Interface and other promotional services. He also informed the National and International affiliations the SIES SOP/PTC has arrived at to promote educational and academic endeavours. He added that one of the specific task is to develop packaging professionals who in turn will be the torch bearers for the further exponential growth of the packaging sector.

The function also witnessed the display of all winning entries. The Presidents alongside the Vice Presidents, and Secretary released the “SIES SOP STAR AWARDS 2017” Winners’ Brochure and they are freely distributed amongst the august gathering.

The function concluded with a word of appreciation to all entrants, congratulations to all winners and sincere thanks to all those who have directly and indirectly helped and supported the event.
