The Committee of Administration (CoA) of the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil) has endorsed the elevation of its vice-chairman SV Veeramani to the position of chairman of the council for the next two years. As per the constitution of the Pharmexcil, the vice-chairman will automatically become the chairman once he completes his term of two years. Veeramani has completed his tenure as vice-chairman on December 31, 2022 and took over charge as the chairman. He succeeds Sahil Munjal and will continue in the seat upto December 31, 2024, sources informed. A pharma industry veteran with good vision and decades of expertise in exports and domestic marketing and manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, Veermanai was the national president of the Indian Drug Manufacturers’ Association (IDMA) until he became the vice-chairman of the Pharmexcil. He is the chairman and managing director (CMD) of Fourrts India Laboratories located in Chennai. In Tamil Nadu, he is involved in many social activities including the development of the pharmacy profession. As part of it, he holds the position of chairman of the Tamil Nadu Pharmaceutical Sciences Welfare Trust, an organisation to promote pharmacy education and help students, teachers and institutions in the field of education. In the year 2021 he was elected unopposed as the vice-chairman of Pharmexcil.
Talking to Pharmabiz, Veeramani said he will continue to strive to support the mission of the Pharmexcil to promote export and in the same way he will work to look after the welfare of the exporters. He will also chalk out strategies to help and improve exports by entrepreneurs of the SME and MSME sectors. The council will conduct export-oriented seminars and workshops for small-scale pharma units to encourage them to enter into export business. He said India needs to improve exports of APIs and formulations in the coming years for which the MSMEs will be supported through a dedicated support system. Welcoming the elevation of SV Veeramani, the president of the Rajasthan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (RPMA), Vinod Kalani said he hopes the new chairman will help the pharma MSME units in the country to get into exports of formulations and APIs from all over India. As far as the pharma MSMEs, who wish to enter into export business, are concerned this is a very good development and we all hope that the chairman will extend all support to the pharmaceutical industry sector in Rajasthan.
“We are all happy, because he knows the pharma industry very well,” Kalani added. Himanshu Shah, chairman of the Federation of Pharmaceutical Entrepreneurs (FOPE) in New Delhi said the Madhya Pradesh chapter of the FOPE expects intervention of Veermani and the activities of Pharmexcil to the state. For a long time no activity is held in MP connected with Pharmexcil. “We want the activities of the pharmaceutical export promotion council in Indore to support the MSME sector and promote exports from the central part of the country,” he said. Himanshu further said with the elevation of Veeramani to the position of chairman of Pharmexcil under the Union ministry of commerce, the pharma MSMEs in the country are sure that he will lend a strong hand to the small players to do export business. MD Varadarajan, president of the TN PMA, the association of pharma SME units in Tamil Nadu, said Veeramani is their mentor and supporter of the pharma industry in the state. He said his new position will help the small players in Tamil Nadu for a better future in the business of pharma exports. He said Veeramani is always a leader in helping the small and medium enterprises.
