Respiratory distress is a common and serious health concern affecting people of all ages worldwide. The Covid-19 pandemic has brought the issue into sharp focus, with many people experiencing respiratory distress due to this viral infection. While there are several treatments available for respiratory distress, a new technology that has emerged in recent years is hydrogen inhalation therapy.

Hydrogen inhalation therapy involves inhaling hydrogen gas to improve health outcomes. It is believed that hydrogen gas has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, and anti-apoptotic properties that can help improve various health conditions, including respiratory distress. The hydrogen inhaler is a device that electrolyse water to generate hydrogen gas and delivers it to the user to inhale.

Beneficial impact of hydrogen inhaler induced hydrogen inhalation therapy
The potential benefits of hydrogen inhalation therapy for respiratory distress are supported by several mechanisms of action.
Antioxidant effect: One mechanism is that hydrogen gas can act as an antioxidant, neutralizing harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can cause inflammation and damage to the lungs. This can help reduce inflammation in the airways and improve lung function.
Anti-inflammatory role: Hydrogen gas can also act as an anti-inflammatory agent, reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines that can contribute to respiratory distress. This can help reduce airway inflammation and improve respiratory function.
Anti-apoptotic property: Hydrogen gas has been shown to have anti-apoptotic properties, meaning it can prevent cell death in the lungs. This can be particularly important in respiratory distress caused by viral infections, where the virus can cause damage and death of lung cells.
Non-invasive and easy to use: In addition to the potential benefits of hydrogen inhalation therapy, there are several other factors that make it an attractive treatment option for respiratory distress. One of the main advantages is that it is non-invasive and easy to administer. The hydrogen inhaler is a small and portable device that can be used at home, making it a convenient treatment option for those with respiratory distress. Also, dual-use technology enables two users to use the machine at the same time.
Safe and well-tolerated: Hydrogen inhalation therapy is also generally safe and well-tolerated. Several studies have reported no adverse effects of hydrogen inhalation therapy and it is considered to be a low-risk treatment option. This makes it a particularly appealing option for those who may not be able to tolerate more invasive or risky treatments.

Trusting the numbers and studies
Several studies have investigated the effectiveness of hydrogen inhalation therapy in improving respiratory distress. A study published in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology in 2017 examined the effects of hydrogen inhalation therapy on a mouse model of asthma and it was observed that the ones who received hydrogen inhalation therapy had significantly reduced airway inflammation, indicating that hydrogen inhalation therapy may be an effective treatment for asthma-related respiratory distress.

Another study, published in the Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition in 2018, investigated the effects of hydrogen inhalation therapy on patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The study found that patients who received hydrogen inhalation therapy had improved lung function, reduced oxidative stress, and improved quality of life compared to those who did not receive the therapy.

In addition to asthma and COPD, hydrogen inhalation therapy has also been investigated as a treatment for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a severe respiratory condition that can occur as a result of viral infections such as Covid-19. A study published in the International Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in 2020 investigated the effects of hydrogen inhalation therapy on patients with ARDS. The study found that patients who received hydrogen inhalation therapy had improved oxygenation, reduced inflammation, and reduced levels of oxidative stress compared to those who did not receive the therapy. The researchers concluded that hydrogen inhalation therapy may be a safe and effective treatment for ARDS-related respiratory distress.

Using hydrogen inhalers - the know-how
So, how does one use a hydrogen inhaler for respiratory issues? Here's a step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Fill the hydrogen inhaler with distilled water
The first step is to fill the hydrogen inhaler with distilled water. Make sure to fill it up to the middle level of the minimum and maximum levels indicated on the device.
Step 2: Turn on the hydrogen inhaler
Once the hydrogen inhaler is filled with water, turn it on. Set the desired time from 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 hours, then touch the start button. The device will then start generating hydrogen gas from the water.
Step 3: Wait for the gas to generate
It takes a few minutes for the hydrogen gas to generate. Typically, it takes around 3-5 minutes for the device to generate enough hydrogen gas for one inhalation session.
Step 4: Inhale the hydrogen gas
Once the hydrogen gas has been generated, inhale it through the nasal cannula. Hold your breath for a few seconds before exhaling. Repeat this process for a few minutes.
Step 5: Auto-turn off mode in hydrogen inhaler
The machine will turn off automatically after it reaches the set time period. The water filled in the machine will last till 4 to 5 weeks time depending on the usage. When you see a red indicator on the pure water button, empty the remaining water and fill fresh distilled water.

It's important to note that the frequency and duration of hydrogen inhalation therapy may vary depending on the severity of the respiratory issue and the individual's health condition. It's advisable to consult a healthcare professional before starting hydrogen inhalation therapy.
Making hydrogen inhalers eco-friendly
    • Use renewable energy sources for hydrogen production
    • Implement efficient production and transportation methods
    • Use recyclable materials for inhaler construction
    • Develop biodegradable hydrogen storage methods
    • Properly dispose of used inhalers

Prevention is better than cure
In addition to using a hydrogen inhaler, there are several other ways to improve respiratory health. Here are some tips:
Quit smoking
Smoking is a major contributor to respiratory issues such as COPD and lung cancer. Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your respiratory health.
Exercise regularly
Regular exercise can help improve lung function and reduce the risk of respiratory issues. Exercise also helps strengthen the muscles used for breathing.
Practice breathing exercises
Deep breathing exercises can help improve lung function and reduce stress. Some examples of breathing exercises include diaphragmatic breathing and pursed-lip breathing.
Maintain a healthy diet
A healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help reduce inflammation and improve respiratory health.

Practice good sleep habits
Getting enough sleep is essential for respiratory health. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep per night and practice good sleep hygiene habits such as avoiding caffeine and electronics before bedtime.

Hydrogen inhalers offer several promising benefits for respiratory health management. With the ability to reduce inflammation, improve lung function, and provide antioxidant benefits, hydrogen inhalers may be a viable alternative to traditional medications for those suffering from respiratory issues. They offer a more sustainable option for respiratory health management compared to traditional medications that may contain harmful chemicals. Hydrogen inhalers represent an exciting development in the field of respiratory health management and may be a valuable addition to a comprehensive approach that includes lifestyle changes, preventative measures, and traditional medical treatments.
