Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, has launched its Centre for Hepatobiliary Sciences and Liver Transplant. The facility has a team of highly qualified hepatologists, transplant surgeons and a well-trained multi-disciplinary team including liver transplant nurses, physiotherapists, dieticians and paramedics. Dr. Kapali Neelamekam, Director, HPB & Liver Transplant Surgery, who has over 30 years of experience and has been associated with some of the leading medical institutions will lead the team.
Annually 500,000 Indians need an organ transplant. A good number of these patients require liver transplants to treat several liver diseases which are increasing at a fast pace. The need for offering affordable and high quality liver transplants with good clinical outcomes is more pronounced than it ever has been, said the hospital.
The facility was opened by Dr. Tan Kai Chah, Executive Chairman, Asian American Transplant Center, Singapore. He has led over 400 liver transplant procedures worldwide so far and is a leading voice in the area of cutting-edge clinical work in this domain.
“Looking at the number of complex cases we get every day for either a liver transplant or to treat liver-related diseases, we felt there was a pressing need to provide our patients a one-stop comprehensive care centre for all liver related ailments. With the increasing awareness about organ transplant, we also have witnessed a spurt in the number of people pledging their organs for donation which augurs well for the state of Karnataka and the country as a whole. We hope to set up a top notch department capable of treating complex liver diseases and saving more and more lives, stated Dr. Manish Mattoo, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospitals.
The hospital stated that the facility is one of the largest and most comprehensive organ transplant programmes in India. The network offers a host of state-of-the-art services which include transplants of heart, liver and kidney intestinal and GI transplants, and transplant services. Fortis Healthcare currently, operates its services in India, Dubai, Mauritius and Sri Lanka with 45 facilities including projects under development. It has around 10,000 potential beds and over 346 diagnostic centres.
