Mumbai based Masina Hospital has announced that it will soon launch a Skin Bank which will give relatives of burn victims an opportunity to donate skin along with eyes. The availability of skin gives early and safe biological cover to burn injuries reduces infection rates and the number of surgeries to achieve healing.

The hospital made the announcement yesterday on the occasion of silver anniversary of The Eric Kharas Burns Research Unit.

The Burns Unit at Masina Hospital was started with just four beds in the seventies under guidance of Dr. M. H. Keswani, an eminent plastic surgeon of his times, who pioneered burns care in India. Today, there are a total of 22 beds in the Burns Unit.

Ever since its inception, the Burns Unit has gained recognition as a prime provider of care for victims of burns, not only in Mumbai but in the entire country.

Many foreign patients come to India to get treated here. We have patients from Dhaka Bangladesh, Spain, Kenya, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria and Yemen. Also, various cases are treated from not only from different areas in Maharashtra but also from different states of India. Typically patients from other cities and second tier towns like Goa, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune,Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, Bhopal, Chiplun, Gulbarga, Nashik, Ranchi, Surat, and more have been admitted to our hospital.

Today, the Burns Unit has a record number of successfully treated cases. Nearly 200 persons were operated/ treated in last three months with age profile ranging from 3 day old to 80 year old patients. As expected, the degree and extent of burns has been varied with a high proportion of severe burns. Over a prolonged period, Masina Hospital has a mortality rate of about 10-12%which is significantly below the national average of 20-25%.

Dr. Vispi Jokhi, medical director, Masina Hospital said, “This unit has acquired a status of a tertiary level - referral centre. The complication rates are negligible and remarkably patients go home without disfigurement or contractures. Moisture retaining dressings are used to improve patient comfort and faster recovery. Another notable aspect is our quality intensive care and drug protocols with emphasis on using minimum medicines. Innovative inexpensive diets provide nutritional support at a fraction of a cost compared to parenterals.”

Treatment at Masina Hospital is subsidized by the Hospital Trust as it caters to lower economic strata of the society as unfortunately it is seen that more than 90 % of the burn cases that we see belong to this particular disadvantaged section. Masina Hospital aims at achieving cost leadership with differentiation in the field of health care related to burns care.
