With Medical Council of India (MCI) allocating a maximum of 8 Doctor of Medicine (DM) seats in the super speciality segment of nephrology, the Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) has emerged as the first hospital in India to have the largest nephrology wing with 8 super speciality nephrology experts and more than 60 dialysis machines catering highest quality medical services at affordable costs to kidney patients in Telangana.

Earlier the nephrology department had only 4 Doctor of Medicine seats. However with the state government providing all necessary infrastructure facilities and with the increased demand for nephrology specialists, the MCI has allocated 4 more DM seats in the nephrology wing making it the largest department in the country.

With NIMS being one of the premier medical institutions for training doctors in super speciality courses, many students from different parts of the country show interests in pursuing DM course at NIMS. At present the nephrology department has 65 dialysis machines which is the maximum number in Telangana state as no other medical institution has so many dialysis machines.

According to authorities at NIMS as many as 40 dialysis technicians are being trained which is the maximum in the country also. “The hospital has achieved a unique distinction of conducting more than 1,000 renal transplants. Every year, more than 100 liver related transplantations are also carried out here. The department is using very less amount of immune suppressants when compared to others as it saves almost Rs.4-5 lakh and the complication of the post transplantation becomes less besides reducing the rejection rate. The success rate of kidney transplantation is very high with about 98 per cent,” informed Professor Dr. Sree Bhushan Raju, Head of Department of Nephrology.

Adding further the professor said that the department of nephrology earlier was a leader in peritoneal dialysis in the country with more than 3000 patients’ undergone peritoneal dialysis in the past 15 years. It was one of the few centres in the country which has got a state-of-the-art methodology for peritoneal dialysis which benefited the elderly, children and those who cannot opt for the haemodialysis.

In fact the department of nephrology in NIMS has also pioneered in using disposable dialysers. Using again and again there are changes of several infections especially hepatitis-B, hepatitis-C and HIV. By using disposable dialyser, the infection rate of hepatitis-C has almost come to zero at NIMS. However this rate of infection in other leading hospitals across the country is around 60-80 per cent.

According to Dr. Bhushan Raju, NIMS is the only hospital in Hyderabad where the super speciality doctors are available 24X7 and patients who are from below poverty line (BPL) families can get kidney transplantation and treatment for nephrology related diseases at free of cost.
