Moving ahead with its vision to improve the lives of 1 billion people by 2025, ECHO India, in collaboration with Ambience Public School, Gurugram, launched The Preventive Health and Wellness ECHO programme, to improve the overall health and well-being of children.

Project ECHO is a collaborative model of medical education and care management that empowers clinicians everywhere to provide better care to more people, right where they live. After the international success of ECHO model in the healthcare space, it was adopted for the first time in the field of education by Ambience Public School, New Delhi, and launched The ECHO Teacher Mentorship Programme 2015 to improve the skill-sets of teachers.

The aim of The ECHO Teacher Mentorship Programme was to adopt the philosophy behind Project ECHO for capacity building and mentoring of teachers by leveraging technology and democratising medical knowledge in order to empower the teachers. The ECHO Teacher mentoring model is a participative model where knowledge is not just imparted from mentors to participants but shared among participants as well.

The programme aims at building capacity of teachers and counselors to pick early signs and symptoms of medical problems in students, guide students and their parents and ensure that appropriate intervention is undertaken to improve the child’s overall health and wellness.

“Children spend a substantial time of their day at school. Teachers work very closely with children so if they were trained to pick up early flag signs of common ailments, they would be able to take appropriate action at the right time, thereby supporting not just students but their own communities,” said Dr Anuradha Rai, principal of Ambience Public School, Gurugram, Programme Lead for this initiative.

Dr Sunil Anand, executive director, ECHO India said, “There is a growing need to identify various health issues in children at the right time. By providing early intervention service through this program, we strive to improve the health and overall wellness of school children, and ultimately of our community. We are delighted that we share our vision with Ambience Public School to provide healthy environment for our children to grow. While we facilitate over 20 ECHO programmes in India, this is the first programme where ECHO India has undertaken the complete ownership.”

The programme will use ECHO’s virtual knowledge sharing networks, link teachers and counselors with healthcare specialists who will address their challenges and mentor teachers and counsellors over the next few months. The inaugural session was conducted by Dr Col. Kumud Rai, director, vascular surgery, Max Superspecialist Hospital Saket and chairman, ECHO India, who will be the chief mentor of the programme; and it was attended by teachers from Ambience Public School, Safdarjung Enclave, HDFC School, Pune, Delhi Public School Hathras, Ramjas Public School (Day Boarding) New Delhi, Maharaja Agrasen Public School, Delhi and several independent counsellors.
