Healthcare organizations witness escalation of risks in cybersecurity: Arvind Srinivasan

Healthcare facilities are witnessing an escalation in cybersecurity risk. These include a busy hospital abruptly disconnected from accessing electronic medical records or document management system, due to a ransomware attack. Even a situation where hackers find a way to connect to the software that controls IV infusion pumps and alter the settings, preventing hospital staff from delivering correct doses of medication. These are some of the worst nightmares of hospitals in India and the world that are becoming a reality, said Arvind Srinivasan, SVP, Strategic - Global Initiatives, eMudhra.

There are three reasons behind the ever increasing risk threat index in healthcare are. One is the abundance of data. Healthcare industry functions in an information-rich environment spanning from data on financial information, medical and family history. There is considerable value for such sensitive information, which can be easily exploited to execute a variety of cyber crimes covering from identity theft to healthcare insurance frauds.

Second is that healthcare organizations have modeled their operation around connectivity with networks and devices. Although this enables automation to seamless information sharing, it is an avenue for cyber attacks. Third is that healthcare organizations have always embraced an open, sharing culture, which does not provide fool-proof security or privacy, he said.

In such a scenario, the best possible solution is the utilization of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology, which enables healthcare organizations to establish the identity of entities. These are devices provide controlled access to systems, protect data with accountability in transactions. Using the principles of asymmetric cryptography, this technology facilitates establishment of a secure exchange of data between end-users, connected devices, embedded systems, web servers or applications operating within the healthcare ecosystem, Srinivasan told Pharmabiz.

This is where Bengaluru- based eMudhra is engaged as a service provider for secure digital transformation and cybersecurity initiatives which would offset the woes in the healthcare industry. Its ‘emSigner’ is an end-to-end paperless solution for healthcare. It is built on PKI Technology and adopts legally valid digital signatures to add a level of authenticity. Therefore the areas of security that need to be addressed by healthcare organizations to stem the influx of cyber attacks are identity assurance, authentication and integrity of data. By addressing all these areas using PKI, healthcare organizations can now safeguard sensitive data in a seamless manner, said Srinivasan.
