Hans Foundation has funded 800 cochlear implants for poor children under Cochlear Implant Programme: Lt. Gen SM Mehta

As one of the largest and most comprehensive programmes of cochlear implantation by any single organization in the country, The Hans Foundation has till date funded over 800 cochlear implants along with support for post-surgery for poor children with hearing impairment to curtail prohibitive costing of about Rs 7 lakhs per ear.

The Cochlear Implant Programme is designed to provide a seamless range of services from specialist assessment to surgical liaison, surgery and rehabilitation services.

Having launched the Cochlear Implant Programme in December 2013, the programme aims to reach children with hearing impairment from underprivileged families who cannot afford the expensive surgery. Each Cochlear Implant procedure (device, surgery and rehabilitation) costs about Rs. 6 to Rs. 7 lakhs per ear, a prohibitive cost for the poor and even the middle class in India.

“Seeing the requirement of it in the country and having studied the full model, the organization decided to take it up for the poor children with profound hearing loss. GST on hearing machines and on the microprocessor in these machines was also very high,” informed Lt. Gen SM Mehta, CEO of The Hans Foundation.

The Foundation has tied up with the country’s state-of-the-art hospitals to run this programme. Children have been operated upon by some of the leading cochlear implant surgeons at Apollo and Max City Hospitals. A lot of army children have also benefited from this programme. Additionally, the Foundation is looking to work in the area of corneal blindness which needs immediate attention.

The implementation of the programme is done by an on-board team of experts which includes cochlear implant surgeons, audiologists, speech and language therapists certified auditory-verbal therapists, counsellors and managers.

A Cochlear implant is an electronic medical device that replaces the function of the damaged inner ear. Unlike hearing aids which make sounds louder, cochlear implants bypass the damaged hair cells of the inner ear to cochlea to provide sound signals to the brain. Children born with hearing impairment cannot develop speech, which affects their overall development.

The foundation is also planning to launch a new programme named Inclusion of Divyangjan Entrepreneur Association (IDEA). Under this programme, it is aiming to have 5,000 disabled people starting their own jobs and become entrepreneurs in the next 5 years. “We are trying to create 1,00,000 jobs for the disabled people in the country. The future is to reach millions of lives more and uplift their lives,” Mehta said.

It recently also launched a comprehensive report titled ‘National Strategy for Inclusive and Community Based Living for Persons with Mental Health Issues’ in association with the taskforce comprising members from the Union health ministry, ministry of social justice and empowerment (MoSJE), The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, The Banyan, ANJALI, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai and other civil society organisations. The study has covered 43 mental health institutions spread across the country and study patients who have been in the facility for more than one year.

The Hans Foundation is a registered public charitable trust established in 2009 providing funding support to not for profit organizations for development programmes in the areas of health, disability and livelihood.

“The Hans Foundation has designed this programme with a 360-degree approach including a feedback mechanism for regular reviews as well as constant course correction and improvement. The Cochlear Implant Programme of The Hans Foundation is a signature programme, a mission to support under-privileged children and provide them with an opportunity to live a fuller and a healthier life. It has also forged significant partnerships through MoUs with Governments of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Nagaland, Kerala, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan to support various developmental programmes. It also supports cancer hospitals, educational institutes, residential schools, corneal eye banks, cochlear implants and congenital heart surgeries for children,” informed Mehta.

The Foundation also runs its other signature programme directly implemented by the organisation like Little Hearts, Hans Hospitals and various Mobile Medical Units to mark a progressive step towards health development of the country. It runs one eye hospital in Haridwar, and also various primary healthcare and women and child health programmes.

The Foundation has hospitals which provide free treatment and runs a multi-speciality state-of-the-art hospital in Uttarakhand, Satpuli. It is also funding heart operations for the children who are born with congenital heart diseases and also funding eye banks all over the country. It is also running a clinic in Sundarbans where there was low medical support earlier.
