Experts are of the view that focus should be on enhancing competency of Indian medical devices sector through skilling and upskilling in sync with the medical and technological advancements.

"Technology can be used for a range of purposes like remote consultation platforms, democratizing diagnostics, monitoring health wearables, manufacturing smart low-cost devices and enabling policy development. What innovations from these initiatives will have in common is that they will solve problems, which is always at the heart of innovation," stated Himanshu Baid, managing director, Poly Medicure Ltd.

Stressing on the need to scale up India's ability to develop products in low-resource settings and to deploy across geographies, he added that it is time to reset the Indian healthcare ecosystem by actively leveraging technologies like cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) to build products and solutions that can be widely adopted.

These innovations can help in getting patients’ needs right, connecting medical device to its users such as doctors, lab technicians and patients, hence improving clinical outcomes.

“With a futuristic and collaborative approach, India will be poised to exponentially grow its medical devices sector to its full potential not only to improve standards of healthcare in India but also to emerge as a trusted partner to the world for healthcare transformation,” Baid added.

"The roadmap should definitely focus on innovation and research and development as a strong pillar of building India’s best-in-class manufacturing ecosystem. We expect that India can emerge as a significant medical device manufacturer,” Baid further added.

"Asia Pacific Medical Technology Association (APACMed) is playing role of a catalyst in the making of a new health economy. This collaborative platform can play the role to facilitate the journey towards affordable, accessible and quality healthcare. This is high time for faster action, bringing in industry and government together. Best practices from other regions could help in drafting APACMed’s strategy for India, and vice-versa. This will also work closely with government to chart changes on policy matters, and enhancing opportunities for the medical technology sector through strategic global alliances," added Baid.

Poly Medicure Ltd is a leading Indian manufacturer and exporter of medical devices with focus on innovation, safety & quality.
