Healthy diet is the key to keep diabetes in control: Dr Prashant Dheerendra

Healthy diet is the key to keep your diabetes in control and with an increase in the number of diabetic patients in the country in the last 15 years, there has been significant change in awareness about diabetes, stated Dr Prashant C Dheerendra, consultant nephrologist, Apollo Dialysis.

Currently, a lot of people are aware of the issue and know that it can be moderated by making the required changes in their lifestyle.

Dr Dheerendra added that it is advised by the doctors to take precautions to control diabetes since it can’t be cured.

"Many people are possibly silently diabetic, but are still unaware due to not having it tested. It is important to empower the patients with knowledge about diabetic self-care in order to have better outcomes of the disease. Two out of three people in the country suffer from diabetes due to bad lifestyle habits. Diabetes is commonly observed amongst children, millennial and Gen Z," stated Dr Dheerendra.

According to a report by International Journal of Community Medicine and Public Health, knowledge about diabetes is fair but still their practice on control of glycemic levels needs to be improved. This shows that it is a necessity to educate the patients in order to prevent or postpone the complications.

Dr Dheerendra also added that diabetes patients should follow safety measures in order to avoid further health issues such as reducing the amount of sodium in your daily diet helps to reduce the risk of other diseases, keep a check on your sugar intake and monitor it with the help of a home glucometer.

Yoga, breathing exercises and daily walks, which will help system naturally absorb sugar, are the other measures to avoid further health issues.

A high percentage of women become diabetic during the course of pregnancy. This can be short term or long term depending on the history and the body type.
