Pluss Advanced Technologies (Pluss), winner of the National Technology Day Innovation Award for its device MiraCradle to treat birth asphyxia, has partnered with Fanem Medical Devices India Private Limited to enhance distribution of MiraCradle in India.

MiraCradle is the world's first non-electronic, portable device based on Phase Change Materials (PCMs), developed in partnership with Christian Medical College, Vellore.

Studies show that new-borns in the underprivileged sections of society – more so in semi-urban and rural areas – are at a higher risk of birth asphyxia which causes insufficient oxygen supply to the newborn's brain, resulting in damage to the brain tissue leading to cerebral palsy, motor disorders or speech and developmental delays, and in some cases even death. Birth asphyxia can be prevented through therapeutic hypothermia, which entails lowering the infant's body temperature.

MiraCradle - Neonate Cooler helps in cooling the infant and maintains the core body temperature precisely between 33 and 34 degree Celsius for 72 hours. MiraCradle comes with six sheets of two different kinds of PCMs, encapsulated in a plastic film for safety. Before use, it requires normal refrigeration for 8 to 10 hours, the PCM sheets need to be removed from refrigeration just 10 to 15 minutes before use. The PCM sheets can be reused multiple times.

“MiraCradle has been designed as a simple device to treat birth asphyxia. Since its introduction in 2014, it has proved to be an effective and sought after, solution. We are delighted to form a partnership with Fanem to enhance the availability of MiraCradle across India, especially in semi-urban and rural areas,” said Samit Jain, managing director, Pluss.

Added Seena Shetty, Fanem Medical Devices India, “Over 8 lakh children die before reaching the age of 5 in India, over 65,000 of which succumb to birth asphyxia and birth trauma, according to a 2019 UNICEF report. MiraCradle is low-cost and easy to transport and operate. It is already being used in over 300 hospitals in India, and our partnership with Pluss will bring MiraCradle to regions where it is needed the most.”

Pluss’s PCM technology-based solutions have also received awards for applications in buildings, refrigeration and logistics, in India and overseas. The materials are used in a variety of sectors and also help the world meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals targets.
