India has emerged as one of the leading destinations in conducting clinical trials and has evolved as one of the major key players in the last few years.  As witnessed by the Covid-19 pandemic, there is a need to improve the healthcare and medical practices along with patient care, and the only effective way to do this is to conduct effective and thorough clinical trials to evaluate the effectiveness of any medical drug, stated Kanishk Dugal, COO of Institute of Clinical Research India (ICRI).

Dugal added that clinical research and healthcare is a new and promising career option that has already been well established globally and is slowly becoming popular in India,  as it offers opportunities  such as clinical trial and data management, statistics, regulation of clinical trials, and medical writing.

“The reason that pulls global investors to India is because our country has an overflowing diverse population of large number of patients. The skilled professionals required in this industry are growing at a fast pace due to advanced information technology and communications. We continuously need to test new medicines as it will ensure access to better patient care and readily medicines available in future for quick recovery,” added Duggal.

India has also seen the rise of several pharmaceutical companies and clinical research organizations (CRO) that are religiously making advancements towards doctors and patients to conduct clinical trials in India. This in turn draws a number of skilled professionals and trained personnel across the globe to India.

Clinical research is a booming industry, as it has employed an estimated 2,10,000 people in the US & over 70,000 in the UK, and that forms one-third of the total R&D staff. Since the number of students graduating each year is far less than the demand, there are more than 250,000 positions vacant across the globe.

Dugal added that candidates can get designations like clinical research associates, regulatory specialists, principal investigators, biostatisticians, project coordinators, and medical writers in various academic trials units, hospitals, the pharmaceutical industry, contract research organizations, and in government regulatory bodies.

There are various courses available in clinical research such as MSc Clinical Research, -BSc Clinical Research & Healthcare Management. Clinical research deals, with determining the safety and effectiveness of medicines, devices, diagnostic products and treatment regimens meant for human use.
