The National Medical Commission (NMC) has written letter to director of all medical colleges regarding antimicrobial resistance and misuse of anti microbials.

The advisory stated that the medical colleges have been advised to have Hospital Infection Control Committee (HICC) and Antimicrobial Stewardship Committees.

Dr. Suresh Chandra Sharma, chairman, NMC said, "We have received a letter from health ministry regarding indiscriminate use of antimicrobials and development of AMR leading to increase in incidence of infection and avoidable morbidity and mortality."

“All hospital and medical colleges should increase the activity of both the committees and prepare guidelines for antibiotic use in their hospitals depending on prevalent organisms and antimicrobial sensitivity,” stated Dr. Sharma.

“Hospitals must have well-functioning 24X7 microbiology laboratories actively involved in management of patients with infectious diseases. The AMR surveillance data generated by such well utilised laboratories is to be used at the facility level to develop antibiotic policy and can be collated at the state and national level to assess the magnitude of the problem,” Health secretary, Rajesh Bhushan said.

AMR has been recognised as a serious and growing public health threat globally that threatens the effective prevention and treatment of an increasing range of infections.

Rajesh Bhushan added, “It is important to replace syndromic management of infectious diseases with laboratory evidence-based treatment to prevent misuse of antimicrobials. Implement AMR containment activities as committed in the National action plan on AMR that is to strengthen and consolidate AMR and related topics as core components of professional education and training.”

The National Medical Commission aim is to improve access to quality and affordable medical education, ensure availability of adequate and high quality medical professionals in all parts of the country; (promote equitable and universal healthcare that encourages community health perspective and makes services of medical professionals accessible to all the citizens; encourages medical professionals to adopt latest medical research in their work and to contribute to research; objectively assess medical institutions periodically in a transparent manner.
