The Telangana health department has decided to focus its concentration on providing quality healthcare facilities in all the government hospitals and has taken corrective measures to ensure all the government doctors are contributing their full time providing services to the public at government hospitals.

Complaints have been flooding with the health ministry during the past few months regarding increased absenteeism by government doctors.  And due to the absence of doctors at the government hospitals, the healthcare services at government hospitals across Telangana have been hit badly.

Taking the issue as a serious one, the newly appointed health minister of Telangana T Harish Rao has decided to assess the performance of each and every government doctor and had instructed the concerned district officials to prepare a list of all government doctors running private clinics and directed them to assess their performance and the time spent with the patients at the government hospitals.

There has been a widespread criticism being levelled against the government doctors for not following duty time schedule and leaving hospitals and absenting to run their private clinics.

There are also a few incidents, which have come to light that the government doctors were found to be suggesting to patients at government hospitals to visit their clinics. This has led to public attention and led to questioning the authenticity of medical services in the state-run- government hospitals by the public and leaders from the opposition parties.

“We have come to learn about the dereliction of duties by many government doctors at PHCs, CHCs and even at some of the Area and District and Teaching hospitals. Some doctors are even suggesting patients to visit their clinics for better treatment. We have acknowledged this issue as a serious one. When the government is pouring 1,000’s of crores every month on improving quality of healthcare services and providing best treatment facilities and providing free medicines to the public, a few doctors are dereliction their duties for their own self gain. We will not tolerate this. We have directed all the district medical and health officials (DM&HO) to prepare the list of all those doctors running private clinics and also instructed them to assess their performance,” said T Harish Rao, health minister of Telangana.

Based on the instructions from the Ministry of Health, the duty timings of each and every doctor and their services will be regularly monitored from now onwards in all government hospitals, said a senior official from the health department.

However, reacting to the new directive from the health minister Putla Srinivas, president of Telangana Government  Doctor’s Association (GDA) said that though it is very important for the doctors to abide by their duty timings and do not cause any inconvenience to the patients with their absenteeism regularly, but during their off the duty time they are entitled to run the private clinics.
