The Andhra Pradesh government with an aim to boost the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector in the state has started wooing the pharmaceutical investors into the state and has decided to give all necessary support and encouragement for setting up new manufacturing units in the state.

Recently, the state government held a meeting with representatives of India’s leading generic pharmaceutical manufacturing industries and held discussions on progress of the pharmaceutical sector in the state and possibilities of new areas of investment particularly in the bulk drug manufacturing and formulations segment.

Sun Pharma’s managing director Dilip Sanghvi, during his recent meeting with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minsiter Y. S Jagan Mohan Reddy was impressed with the state government’s pro-active and encouraging industrial policy and expressed his intent to set up an end-to-end integrated pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in state.

With this initiative from the Sun Pharma, Andhra Pradesh which was long waiting for a big investor to boost its pharmaceutical segment has realised. Once Sun Pharma establishes its manufacturing unit in the state, this will lead a way for others to follow suit and the state government is expecting this starting initiative will attract more and more people from the pharma sector to invest in the state and further boost the nascent pharmaceutical segment in the state.

After bifurcation of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh into Telangana and residual Andhra Pradesh states, the major part of pharmaceutical base was left behind with the Telangana state while Andhra Pradesh had left with only the Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City in Vishakhapatnam.

Currently, Andhra Pradesh has less than around 200 pharmaceutical companies set up in various parts of the state. The Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City project which is a major hub in Andhra Pradesh is housing around 160 different formulations and bulk drug industries and it contributes the major revenue churner for the state relating to the pharmaceutical sector.

Though, earlier the state government had proposed to set up a few more formulations and bulk drug manufacturing clusters in North, Central and Southern parts of Andhra Pradesh during Chandra Babu Naidu’s regime, however, major pharma companies have expressed their in ability to establish their units due to unfavorable climatic conditions and stringently pollution control regulatory norms by the earlier state government.

However, the state government of Andhra Pradesh is determined to set up pharmaceutical clusters in different parts of the state with an aim to achieve inclusive growth of all areas of the state and accordingly has also zeroed in on suitable places for setting up industries in Vijayanagar district in Northern Andhra Pradesh, Guntur in central parts and Ananthapur district in the southern parts of the state.
