Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), an Institution of National Importance under the Department of Science and Technology, has bagged a patent for an improved metal stent for use in blood vessel to be used in the treatment of aortic aneurysm.

The invention titled “An improved stent for use in blood vessels with enhanced fixation” has received the patent for a term of 20 years from the date of filing, which is November 1, 2017, according to the documents from the Patent Office.

The invention is related to an improved stent for use in blood vessel with enhanced fixation. Stent grafts are medical devices being used for the repair of aortic aneurysm, a bulge that forms in the aortic wall.

This aneurysm eventually leads to rupture in the aorta. A tubular woven graft supported by a tubular metal scaffold (stent graft) is placed inside the disease affected aorta to prevent blood from entering the aneurysm and thus reduces its chance of rupture.

The institution explains that the stent graft is deployed in the aorta by enclosing the stent graft within a sheath, which is then inserted through the femoral artery and into the aorta. Once the stent graft reaches the intended position the sheath is retracted to allow the stent graft to expand. A stent graft delivery system is used for this deployment process.

The stent in stent graft is designed in such a way that it should be crimpable to a smaller diameter so that it can be easily inserted through the femoral artery. Hence it is of importance to design the stent so that it could be enclosed in the sheath within a small diameter.

The stent should have sufficient radial strength so that optimum fixation is ensured after deploying the prosthesis inside the aorta. The fixation should overcome the forces due to blood flow drag and pulsatile pressure and thus prevent longitudinal and rotational migration.

Therefore, the invention is to propose an improved stent for use in blood vessels with enhanced fixation, which has sufficient fixation when placed inside the aorta and has sufficient radial strength to oppose radial deformation. It is also claimed to be capable of providing resistance to longitudinal and rotational migration. An asymmetric structure of the stent ensures better fixation of stent graft in aorta, it claimed.

The patent office, after going through the submissions and hearings, said that it is satisfied that the objections to the hearing notice were rendered moot and since no objections are outstanding, and since no pre-grant representations were filed as per the records, the application is proceeded to grant based on the two claims filed on March 24, 2023.

The Institute focuses on high quality, advanced treatment of cardiac and neurological disorders, indigenous development of technologies for biomedical devices and materials and public health training and research. It offers advanced treatment using modern technologies in several specialised areas such as interventional radiology, cardiac electrophysiology, deep brain stimulation for movement disorders, epilepsy surgery, paediatric cardiac surgery, base of skull and vascular surgeries, to name a few.

It has facilities and teams of professionals dedicated to the development of innovative biomedical devices and products, evaluation of medical devices to global specifications, training in novel medical specialties and research in medical and public health areas of social relevance. The Institute is a Technical Research Centre for Biomedical devices and has a medical devices incubator (TIMed).
