The Quality Council of India (QCI) has highlighted the importance of initiating healthcare quality interventions in rural areas and tier 2 and tier 3 cities with the launch of Digital Health Accreditation Standards for Hospitals among others.

In order to achieve the goal of patient safety, the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) has recently released new standards including 1st Edition of Digital Health Accreditation Standards for Hospitals, Entry Level Certification Standards for Dental Clinics, Certification Standards for Stroke Care Centres, Care Home Accreditation Standards; 2nd Edition of Allopathic Clinics Accreditation Standards comprising Dialysis, Dermatology and Day Care and 3rd Edition of Accreditation Standards for Dental Service Providers, aimed at enhancing healthcare quality and ensuring patient safety at the grassroots level.

The NABH is a constituent board of QCI, set up to establish and operate accreditation programmes for healthcare organisations.

Jaxay Shah, chairperson, QCI, said, “We believe that quality change begins at the very foundation of our healthcare system, not limited to only metropolitan cities but also in the rural and tier 2 and tier 3 cities of India. And, NABH, a constituent board of the QCI is very well in alignment with this vision. The release of new NABH standards in the Entry Level Certification Standards for Dental Clinics and existing Certification Programmes for Entry Level Hospitals is a testament to our dedication to making quality care accessible to them.”

Talking about the importance of patient safety, Dr R. P. Singh, secretary general, QCI , emphasized, “Recognizing the profound significance of quality and well-being of patients, a robust quality ecosystem in healthcare is not only crucial for elevating our healthcare industry but also for positioning it firmly on the global map, aligned with international standards of healthcare. Through collaborative efforts, transparency, and accountability, we aspire to build a healthcare system that not only meets but exceeds the expectations of patients and sets new benchmarks in quality and safety."

Echoing similar views, Dr. Atul Mohan Kochhar, CEO, NABH emphasized on the intricate link between technology and patient safety. He added that in this digital age, the fusion of healthcare and technology is not merely an option; it's an imperative. The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) has paved our way toward harnessing digital health solutions to improve patient safety. NABH recognizes the urgency and potential of this mission. Our pledge is to play a key role in driving the nationwide adoption of Digital Health (DH) standards and practices, aligning seamlessly with the ABDM framework.”
