Narayana Health City proves its capability in paediatric care by successfully treating a two-year-old patient Zeenia hailing from Sahiwal in Pakistan suffering from Hemaphagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare disease where bone marrow produces some abnormal cells which eats away the normal marrow cells.
The panel of experts led by Dr. Sunil Bhat, Senior Consultant and Head of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant, Narayana Health performed bone marrow transplant (BMT) taken from the patient’s 8-month-old sibling Rayan.
“The case was challenging from the donor’s perspective who was just 8-months old. Typically, their bones are very soft and supple. Further, extracting the stipulated dosage may also be quite challenging. However, by using small marrow extraction needles and with the assistance of our able team, we successfully extracted enough marrow which helped to cure Zeenia’s disease. Rayan has not only saved his sister, he also has the unique distinction of being the youngest marrow donor in India”, said Dr. Bhat.
Dr Shobha, paediatric haematologist-oncologist and other medical specialists helped in the transplant and stabilised Zeenia’s condition Rayan, turned out to be a complete HLA match for his sister. Today, Zeenia is cured of her deadly disease and is ready to leave for Pakistan and lead a normal life like other children.
According to Dr Sharat Damodar, Senior Consultant Haematologist and Clinical Director, Narayana Health City, the advanced facilities and experienced doctors at the hospital has become the most sought after for both national and international patients. Just over a decade ago, two-and-a-half-year-old Noor Fatima came to Narayana Health City from Lahore, Pakistan and was cured of her congenital heart disorder.
The BMT Unit at the Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Centre, Narayana Health City is recognized globally as a leading referral centre for both autologous and allogenic stem transplant. The unit has completed more than 650 stem cell transplants till date, he added.
