Vanderbilt data shows Veegum makes tablets compact & disintegrate faster

Veegum which are natural smectite clays and are traditionally used as suspension stabilizer, emulsion stabilizer, thickening agent in liquid pharmaceutical products, can now be used as a tablet binding agent, disintegrating agent, taste masking and sustained release stabilizer, revealed technical data released by US-based Vanderbilt Minerals.

Data shows that Veegum (excipient) can be used in solid dosage form as component of drug delivery system because this entirely natural excipient provides a unique combination of physiochemical property for drug-clay interaction, including cation exchange, anion exchange, hydrogen bonding, high surface area and intercalation.

It helps pharmaceutical manufacturers reduce size of formulations containing various ingredients including micro crystalline cellulose, dicalcium phosphate, lactose, starch, fumed silica and various other disintegrating and binding agents. Many times these ingredients lead to an increase in size of tablet. Currently consumers prefer smaller size of tablets to consume easily and safely.

Small amount of Veegum dosage (2-10%) helps formulation makers avail product with desired hardness, DT, good binding and good dissolution profile. Veegum also helps manufacturers reduce use of other unnecessary fillers, binders and disintegrants in tablet formulations. Finally formulations can be compacted in terms of size and become cost effective in terms of commercials.

Various bibliographic data also shows that Veegum improves dissolution of poorly soluble drugs. Veegum is used for taste masking agent and odour masking agent.

Veegum is manufactured by Vanderbilt Minerals in United States from their GMP site. Veegum has a long history of use as excipient in pharmaceutical formulations. In liquids, they are used primarily as suspension stabilizers and emulsion stabilizers. In solid dosage forms they are traditionally used as binders and disintegrants for wet granulations and, in micronized form, for direct compression tablets. In control released formulations, it is used as binder, stabilizer and controlled release agent.

Veegum has many grades including regular F (Mangnesium Aluminium Silicate NF, Type IB), HV (Mangnesium Aluminium Silicate NF, Type IC), K (Mangnesium Aluminium Silicate NF, Type IIA), HS (Purified Bentotite NF). Except Veegum F which is available in micronized powder, all are available in fine granules.

In the United States, pharmaceutical grade smectite clays must conform to the specifications of one of three national formulary (NF) monographs: Magnesium Aluminium Silicate NF, Purified Bentonite NF, Bentonite NF.

Pioma Chemicals is a sole distributor of Veegum for South Asian market including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal.
