The intent to hire in healthcare and pharmaceutical sector has grown from 58% during the period (April- June 2021) to 60% in the current quarter (July-September 21), stated Balasubramanian A, business head (consumer and healthcare), TeamLease Services.
“Healthcare and pharma has been exhibiting consistent growth in its intent to hire since the last 2 quarters. Nurses is one of the profiles wherein the demand continues to stay at 2x. The other profiles are sales, engineering, office services and blue collar also showing strong intent to hire,” stated Balasubramanian.
The hiring of nurses on a temporary basis has gone up substantially following the second wave of Covid-19 and the key reasons are the vaccination drives and home-care services provided by private hospitals.
“Temporary staffing is the best suited to address the situation. It gives employers with the flexibility and talent access to opportunities making it a win-win for both,” stated Balasubramanian.
From availability of talent, while the government has allowed even final year students to join the workforce, the requirement is far higher. In India, we have only 17 nurses for every 10,000 patients and the Covid situation has further narrowed the ratio.
Reverse migration and the fear of Covid amongst some of the frontline workers are also other concern that is affecting the healthcare companies.
Balasubramanian stated that while the percentage of people who have migrated back to their home town may be negligible, as there is dearth of skilled talent reverse migration even if it is miniscule it is putting pressure on the system.
