Dr Ashok B Vaidya, research director, Kasturba Health Society, Medical Research Centre, Mumbai passed away last night (July 8 2024). Over the years, his contribution to bridge between modern pharmacology and traditional medicine led to a deeper appreciation of Ayurved approaches.

He is credited with amplifying the approach of reverse pharmacology, now regarded as a robust validation in traditional medicine. Many key lectures, papers, articles, committee decisions resulted in related policies and schemes which even led to collaboration between CSIR and Ayush. Following this, Dr Vaidya is said to have stated, “The age of renaissance in Ayurved has dawned”.

Dr Vaidya, like many in his generation were part of the establishment of Ayurveda Drug Manufacturers Association (ADMA).  Amongst many such platforms, he  inspired  many legacy programmes  like the Update Ayurved, New Millennium Indian Technology Leadership Initiative (NMITLI), CSIR Golden Research Triangle, successive Planning Commission Reports, Ayurved sectors application to House of Lords UK even has his stamp of contribution, said Dr DBA Narayana, CSO,  Ayurvedic Trust.

Deeply saddened to read this. I recall Ashokbhai as a senior who taught me (as a CSIR Pool officer) all about cirrhosis of the liver in a ward lecture. Afterwards, he guided ua as his juniors in the Pharma Industry. His deep knowledge and understanding of Ayurveda, and his passion to have its contributions recognised, paired well with his training at Yale. His commitment to scientific method and its application to all quests for knowledge should be an inspiration to all. Rama provided the perfect foil, and Vidita the perfect motivation for Ashokbhai. Godspeed your soul to meet Him Ashokbhai. You will be missed on the scientific scene.
