Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw ranked among India’s generous Women Philanthropists by EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2025

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, founder and chairperson of Biocon Group, has been recognized as the Second Most Generous Woman Philanthropist in the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2025. She has contributed Rs. 83 crore (approximately US$ 10 million) towards advancing science, research, and development, reaffirming her long-standing commitment to social progress through innovation and knowledge creation.
 
This year’s list honours 24 remarkable women philanthropists for their outstanding contributions across key areas such as ecosystem building, research and development, education, rural upliftment, skill development, and water conservation, among others.
 
According to Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, founder & chairperson, Biocon Group said, “For me, philanthropy has never been about the magnitude of giving, but about giving with a purpose, a purpose to create lasting impact and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives and in society. Through my philanthropic initiatives, I remain committed to nurturing ideas and institutions that can change the world for the better and help build a more equitable and inclusive future.”
 
EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2025 highlighted, “Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, 72, ranks second among women philanthropists, donating Rs. 83 crore, primarily supporting science, research, and education. As the founder and chairperson of Biocon, she is dedicated to enhancing healthcare access and advancing medical research. Through Mazumdar Shaw Philanthropy (MSP), she is committed to building critical mass at leading Indian and global academic, arts, and social institutions. In doing this, she hopes to create and support research ecosystems for breakthrough ideas and transformative global impact. MSP is focused on exploring the frontiers of scientific discovery, nurturing artistic expression, honouring India’s culture and heritage, and bringing communities together.”
 
The pharma industry has the largest number of philanthropists in the list, accounting for 16%, followed by software & services, automobile & auto components and chemicals & petrochemicals at eight per cent each.
