A GOOD INITIATIVE BY DCGI

The Drugs Controller General of India has some time back directed the drug licensing authorities in the states and Union Territories to implement display of a Quick Response (QR) code for adverse drug reporting at all retail and wholesale pharmacy premises across the country. The DCGI’s decision in this regard was in line with the decision of the 16th Working Group Meeting of the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI), held in June last year, and it was initiated in an effort to strengthen the patient safety and pharmacovigilance in the country. Besides, the toll-free number of PvPI should also be clearly displayed with the QR code at each pharmacy outlet. Earlier, the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) had introduced a first-of-its-kind online reporting platform designed for easy access through a QR code, in order to enhance consumer participation in reporting adverse drug reactions. It also advised that the Code and the toll-free number should be displayed in all retail and wholesale pharmacy or chemist stores across the country. Now, based on this DCGI directive, all state licensing authorities and Union Territory drug licensing authorities should ensure the display of a designated QR code at a prominent location within every retail and wholesale pharmacy premises across the country. There can be no two opinions about the fact that it is good initiative by the DCGI as it will empower the public, enabling them to instantly report any suspected adverse event after buying medicines. By scanning the QR Code, individuals can seamlessly access the online reporting system. The simultaneous display of the toll-free number will ensure that a communication channel remains open for all citizens, regardless of digital literacy, thus reinforcing the accessibility of the reporting system. Every report made through the QR code or the helpline is directly fed into the PvPI’s Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring System (ADRMS). This national software, coordinated by the IPC, plays a vital role in collecting and analyzing safety data unique to the Indian population.

Obviously, it is a nationwide initiative to strengthen patient safety and pharmacovigilance under the PvPI.  This measure will facilitate seamless reporting of adverse events and adverse drug reactions by the public and healthcare professionals through ADRMS. This indigenously developed ADRMS software of PvPI is the country’s first medical product safety database tailored to meet the needs of the Indian population. It facilitates the collection and analysis of adverse events related to medicines and medical devices, thereby significantly strengthening the country’s pharmacovigilance infrastructure. This software not only streamlines the reporting process but also empowers consumers and healthcare professionals to directly report adverse events, ensuring a more comprehensive capture of safety information. The data received through ADRMS will help IPC to make regulatory recommendations to the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation in making informed regulatory decisions and promotes the safe use of medicines among healthcare professionals and the public. Now, the drug authorities should ensure that both the QR code and the toll-free number are displayed at a prominent, visible, and unobstructed location to guarantee easy public access. It should encourage the public to actively participate in the movement as a robust ADR reporting is fundamentally essential for safeguarding public health.  Of course, this initiative by the DCGI is a national commitment for continuous safety monitoring and early detection of medication-related adverse events, and in this endeavour the drug authorities are making every customer a participant in drug safety.
