The responsibilities of pharmacists have expanded beyond merely dispensing medicines in an interconnected world, and their ability to bridge the gap between patients and the healthcare system ensures the care needed to everyone, said Union minister for health and family welfare and chemicals and fertilisers, J P Nadda.
In a message to the pharmacists on the World Pharmacists Day, on September 25, he added that the commitment and professionalism of the pharmacists will remain key in addressing global health needs going forward.
"In our interconnected world, your responsibilities have expanded beyond merely dispensing medicines. Your ability to bridge the gap between patients and the healthcare system ensures that everyone has access to the care they need, regardless of their circumstances," said the Minister in a message published by the Pharmacy Council of India.
This year's theme "Pharmacists: Meeting Global Health Needs", perfectly captures the vital role pharmacists play in addressing the health challenges of today's world.
Pharmacists are at the forefront of the healthcare system, ensuring the safe and effective use of medications.
"Your expertise not only enhances patient outcomes, but also supports vital public health initiatives," he added.
The Covid-19 pandemic highlighted the resilience and adaptability of the pharmacists, as they continued to provide essential services under challenging conditions, he recalled.
"You are an essential part of the global healthcare workforce, and your contributions are vital for achieving universal health coverage and improving health outcomes worldwide," said the Minister while thanking the pharmacists for unwavering dedication and for the critical role they play in improving the health and well-being of our communities.
World Pharmacists Day is globally commemorated annually on September 25, as an effective strategy to boost the recognition of the field and acknowledge the vital contribution made by the pharmacy professionals in enhancing global health results.
The PCI has called for the stakeholders to undertake various activities to mark the occasion, including conducting rallies on the theme throughout India, display boards and hoardings at prominent places, organising health screening camps, sensitising the public regarding the role of pharmacists in meeting global health needs through social media and other platforms.
It also urged the stakeholders to conduct awareness programmes regarding the role of clinical pharmacists in creating awareness on generic medicines, patient counselling, reduction of drug abuse, role of current Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), among others.
