In a significant move to enhance drug regulation and monitoring in Odisha, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has announced the establishment of a Sub-Zonal Office in Bhubaneswar. Operating from the premises of the Central Drug Testing Laboratory (CDTL) in Bhubaneswar, the Sub-Zonal Office will function under the administrative control of CDSCO’s East Zone headquartered in Kolkata.
This development is a crucial step towards strengthening drug control infrastructure, ensuring quality medicines, and fostering pharmaceutical industrialization in the region.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi lauded the initiative on X, stating, “Thanks @PMOIndia and Shri @JPNadda ji for giving nod to set up the Sub-Zonal office of Central Drug Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), #Bhubaneswar. This marks a significant step toward fostering pharmaceutical industrialisation. This milestone has brought us closer to becoming a global leader in pharma excellence and innovation. #ViksitOdisha.”
The Sub-Zonal Office will focus on regulatory compliance, inspection of manufacturing facilities, and quality assurance of drugs in Odisha, thereby streamlining the state’s drug regulatory mechanisms.
The establishment of the Bhubaneswar office is part of the broader vision of Dr. Rajeev Raghuvanshi, the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI), to decentralize operations and enhance the efficiency of drug regulation across India. Under Dr. Raghuvanshi’s leadership, the CDSCO has adopted a people-centric approach, leveraging technology and collaboration to ensure access to safe and effective medicines.
At the state level, Odisha’s Drugs Controller, Mamina Patnaik, has lauded the development terming it as a progressive step. She has been instrumental in reinforcing the state’s drug control systems. Her initiatives include implementing stringent quality checks, upgrading infrastructure, and fostering collaboration with pharmaceutical stakeholders to ensure patient safety.
Industry experts believe that these efforts, coupled with the new Sub-Zonal Office, will bolster Odisha’s position as a pharmaceutical hub, attracting investment and promoting innovation. With this milestone, CDSCO and Odisha are poised to play a pivotal role in advancing India’s pharmaceutical sector and ensuring public health.
