National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) in an effort to advancing genetic science for a healthier future, hosted the 49th Annual Meeting and International Conclave on Neurogenetics organised by the Indian Society of Human Genetics (ISHG). It focused in the country’s advancements in genetics and its healthcare applications.

Dr V K Paul, member, NITI Aayog, who was the chief guest lauded significant milestones in India's genetic research journey, including the launch of Immuneel Qartemi, India’s second CAR-T cell therapy for B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and ground breaking lentiviral gene therapy research for haemophilia A by Dr Alok Shrivastava of CMC Vellore.

Noting that the ISHG 2025 conclave reinforces India’s growing leadership in genetic research, fostering innovation for domestic and global healthcare solutions, Dr Paul said, "India is accelerating innovation to not only meet domestic needs but also create global solutions. Together, we are moving closer to a future where rare diseases are no longer insurmountable, and personalized medicine becomes a reality for all.”

Dr Paul highlighted national collaborations addressing rare genetic conditions like thalassemia, retinal dystrophy, and lysosomal storage diseases. He announced the availability of life-saving drugs for thalassemia, Gaucher’s disease, Wilson’s disease, and sickle cell disease in children, noting that over 40 million individuals have been screened for sickle cell anaemia.

“India’s genetic research is driving innovation, positioning us as global leaders,” Dr. Paul said. “Through Viksit Bharat 2047, we aim to transform healthcare and leave no one behind.”

Prof BK Thelma, president, ISHG, encouraged early-career researchers to embrace mentorship and collaboration, urging students to make the most of the conference's opportunities.

Dr Pratima Murthy, director, NIMHANS, marked the institute’s 50-year legacy and initiatives like Tele-MANAS and the Brain Health Initiative. She also unveiled plans for an incubation centre to foster innovation and released commemorative stamps celebrating NIMHANS’ achievements.

She spotlighted the genetic basis of brain disorders, particularly autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and explored personalized interventions. Collaborative research under initiatives like DBT ADBS and SKAN Foundation was highlighted as crucial for advancing rare disease treatments.

Dr Monojith Debnath, organizing chairperson, ISHG, introduced eco-friendly initiatives, an early morning run, and brainstorming sessions to encourage holistic participation and collaborations and Dr Mathivanan Jothi closed the ceremony with a vote of thanks.
