In a significant operation, the drugs control administration (DCA) in Telangana raided a habitual offender's residence in Moosarambagh at Malakpet in Hyderabad, where they confiscated a large quantity of drugs suspected to be spurious.

Puvvada Lakshmana, a habitual offender with a history of involvement in spurious drug cases across the state, was found to have illegally stocked drugs at his residence.

The raid resulted in the seizure of four varieties of suspected spurious drugs, including antidiabetics, antihypertensive drugs, and abortion kits, with an estimated total worth of Rs. 5.21 lakhs. Department sources stated that Puvvada Lakshmana is a habitual offender with several spurious drug cases pending against him in Telangana.

During the raid at the offender's residence, authorities seized stocks of four suspected spurious drugs. These included Tazloc-CT 6.25 (telmisartan and chlorthalidone tablets), purportedly manufactured by Madras Pharmaceuticals in Chennai and marketed by USV Pvt. Ltd in Mumbai. Also seized were Dapacose-10 (10 mg) and Dapacose-5 (5 mg) tablets (dapagliflozin tablets), claimed to be manufactured by Innova Captab Ltd. in Solan and marketed by J B Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Ltd in Mumbai. Finally, Clear-Kit tablets (combipack of mifepristone and misoprostol tablets), allegedly manufactured by Maxcare Laboratories Pvt. Ltd in Dehradun and marketed by Medley Pharmaceuticals Ltd in Mumbai, were also confiscated.

A N Sulaiman, managing director of Madras Pharmaceuticals in Chennai, remained silent when presented with the information about the seizure of spurious Tazloc CT.

The raid team included G. Prasad, ADC at Rangareddy, D. Saritha, ADC at Secunderabad, and drug inspectors G. Anil, B. Govind Singh and M. Surendranath. DCA officers collected samples from the seized drugs for analysis. A thorough investigation will ensue, leading to appropriate legal action against all involved offenders.

The drugs control administration emphasized on the severe public health threat posed by spurious drugs. According to the officials, illicit medications not only fail to treat illnesses effectively but can also lead to dire long-term consequences for patients, gravely jeopardizing their health.
