NABH seeks comments on draft NABH certification standards for Nursing Excellence 2nd Edition by June 30

The National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) has sought stakeholders’ comments following the release of the first draft of the 2nd Edition Certification Standards for Nursing Excellence, inviting comments, suggestions, and objections from stakeholders across the healthcare sector.

As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance quality and patient care in Indian healthcare institutions, NABH is revising the existing Nursing Excellence Certification Standards. The 2nd Edition aims to reflect current best practices, regulatory requirements, and innovations in nursing care delivery.

Stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, nursing leaders, hospital administrators, accreditation consultants, and members of the public, are encouraged to review the draft and contribute their feedback. The public consultation process is designed to ensure inclusivity and transparency, enabling a collaborative approach to quality improvement.

“The revision of the Nursing Excellence Certification Standards is crucial to meet the evolving needs of the healthcare ecosystem. We look forward to constructive engagement from all stakeholders to help us shape the final standards,” stated Dr. Atul Mohan Kochhar, CEO, NABH.

Interested parties can access the draft on the official NABH website. All comments must be submitted within the specified timeline of June 30, 2025.

Summary of the draft standards stipulates that the organization has a documented system of nursing resource planning. The staff are provided with induction training at the time of joining the organization. There is an ongoing programme for professional training and development of the staff. Nursing professionals are appropriately trained based on their specific job description. Staff are trained in safety and quality-related aspects.

Draft standards stipulate that there is a process for credentialing and privileging of nursing professionals, permitted to provide patient care without supervision. An appraisal system for evaluating the performance of nursing professionals exists as an integral part of the nursing resource management process.

It also stipulates that the process for disciplinary and grievance handling is defined and implemented in the organisation. There is an established process in place to identify and manage problems related to incompetent, unsafe or unprofessional conduct.  The organization demonstrates workplace safety and concern of wellbeing for nursing professionals (including change rooms, washrooms & dining facilities). The organization has a documented and established grievance handling system. The nursing department to specify the role of workforce assisting in nursing functions.
