The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) – National Institute of Epidemiology (ICMR-NIE) will be conducting the ICMR SHINE Initiative 2025 on August 8, 2025 to inspire school students to pursue biomedical research careers.
SHINE stands for Science & Health Innovation for the Nextgen Explorers. The purpose is to inspire school students to pursue biomedical research careers by showcasing impactful ICMR-NIE research, providing hands-on experiences, and enabling expert interactions across all institutes.
The initiative will address questions like ---How does research in public health save lives? What does a scientist at ICMR – National Institute of Epidemiology (ICMR-NIE) really do every day? Science and medical research aren’t just something we read in textbooks — it’s something we do. And at ICMR-NIE, we want school students to experience this.
ICMR SHINE Initiative 2025 is being conducted simultaneously in all ICMR institutes. The objective is to inspire school students to pursue biomedical research careers by showcasing impactful ICMR research, providing hands-on experiences, and enabling expert interactions across all institutes. secondary and senior secondary school students (classes 9 to 12) in and around ICMR-NIE are our target audience. At ICMR-NIE, we aim to reach out to 200-250 students.
On 08 August 2025, students from select schools will visit ICMR-NIE in two batches, forenoon and afternoon each for 2.5 hours. In batches, students will get an overview of ICMR-NIE, followed by a recorded address by Dr Rajiv Bahl, secretary department of health research and director general of ICMR.
This will be followed by research stories and group activities. The group activities include a survey game, anthropometry game, visit to laboratory and exhibition by ICMR-NIMR (National Institute of Malaria Research) field unit based at ICMR-NIE. The students will get an opportunity to meet scientists and technical staff of ICMR-NIE and understand the role they play in public health research and the work they do on a day-to-day basis.
