The Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil) is in talks with the stakeholders to launch an online logistics platform to streamline operations by centralizing services and information currently hindered by fragmentation and opaque practices. The online platform also seeks to unify and enhance transparency among logistics stakeholders—exporters, importers, service providers, and regulators.

Key features of the online logistics platform include integrated compliance management, competitive pricing through bidding models, booking of value-added services like warehousing and insurance, route optimization, digital document exchange, real-time tracking, and a feedback mechanism to improve service quality.

“Future webinars will be planned for member exporters on the same,” according to an official associated with the development.

The launch of the National Accreditation Body for Cold Chain Management (NAB-CCM) earlier this year also marked a significant milestone in ensuring ethical practices and compliance in pharmaceutical cold chain logistics. Industry experts discussed the evolving landscape of cold chain management in India, emphasizing the importance of good distribution practices (GDP), regulatory frameworks, and technological advancements.

Experts also pinpoint on crucial aspects of cold chain logistics, such as policy frameworks, the need for a standardized curriculum in life sciences and healthcare education, and the role of accreditation bodies in maintaining compliance.

One of the key challenges highlighted is the lack of end-to-end monitoring in cold chain logistics, leading to disruptions that impact the potency and efficacy of pharmaceutical products. Experts also emphasize the growing role of artificial intelligence and predictive analytics in optimizing supply chain operations and ensuring real-time tracking of temperature-sensitive goods.

With the Indian cold chain sector evolving rapidly, stakeholders underscored the increasing importance of stringent temperature control measures to maintain drug efficacy. Experts recommend that there is an urgent necessity of establishing a certifying or accreditation body for cold chain management to standardize operations across the industry.

NAB-CCM aims to address these challenges by introducing specialized training programs and certifications to equip professionals with the required expertise.

Pharmaceutical logistics demands safe, quick delivery amid complex supply chain challenges and strict regulations.

Key strategies to optimize operations and enhance patient safety is using advanced warehousing solutions.  Specialized warehousing services help ensure compliance with storage requirements for sensitive products. These facilities often include temperature-controlled environments and real-time inventory tracking, which are crucial for maintaining product safety and efficacy.

Selecting the appropriate mode of transport, be it road, air, or sea is vital in pharmacy logistics is paramount. Each mode has its advantages depending on factors such as delivery speed and temperature control.

Implementing real-time monitoring and tracking is of vital importance. Real-time visibility into the shipment's condition including temperature and humidity is essential for maintaining compliance and ensuring product safety.

Legal compliance is critical in pharmaceutical logistics due to stringent regulations. Automating export documentation and standardizing labels based on regional requirements streamline operations and reduce the risk of non-compliance. Implementing internal auditing solutions further helps identify potential issues before they escalate, ensuring smooth logistics operations.

Adhering to GDP is essential for maintaining product quality throughout the supply chain. It is recommended to implement robust compliance management systems to ensure all regulatory requirements are met, thereby mitigating risks associated with penalties or product recalls.

Embracing technologies like blockchain for visibility and AI for predictive analytics enhances supply chain efficiency. These technologies improve visibility, reduce counterfeit risks, and enable rapid responses to emerging challenges. By leveraging data-driven insights, pharmaceutical companies can optimize inventory levels and streamline logistics processes.
