ICMR announces IHCIP 2025 to enhance public health communication

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has announced the ICMR Health Communications Internship Programme (IHCIP) -2025 to enhance public health communication.

Duration of internship is 3 months between December 2025 and March 2026. For the 2026 cohort, the programme will have a maximum intake of 30 interns. Selected candidates will be placed at ICMR institutes across India. While applicants can indicate their location preferences, final placements will be determined by the Internship Secretariat, and preferences are not guaranteed.

To be considered for the IHCIP 2025, candidates are required to fill out the application form online by November 30, 2025 mentioned in ICMR website at https://www.icmr.gov.in. Remuneration for the program is Rs. 10,000 per month.

The IHCIP offers a unique opportunity for young professionals passionate about public health communication. Open to students currently enrolled in or recently graduated from undergraduate or graduate programmes across disciplines, the internship provides hands-on-experience in health communication strategy, content development, and public engagement. Selected interns will be placed at ICMR Headquarters or one of its 28 institutes across India for a three-month period, gaining exposure to cutting-edge research and science communication in public health.

ICMR, headquartered in New Delhi, is India’s apex body for the formulation, coordination, and promotion of biomedical research. As one of the world’s oldest medical research institutions, ICMR aligns its research priorities with national health objectives to reduce disease burden and enhance public well-being.

Eligibility criteria stipulates that applicants must be Indian citizens currently in the final year of their undergraduate studies or enrolled in a postgraduate programme in any academic discipline. Candidates who have completed their undergraduate or postgraduate degrees within the last two years from the internship’s start date are also eligible.

Undergraduate degree holders must have a minimum aggregate of 55% or a CGPA of 5.7+, while postgraduate degree holders must have a minimum aggregate of 50% or a CGPA of 5.2+. Candidates currently pursuing their undergraduate or postgraduate studies must maintain a minimum aggregate percentage of 55% and 50% across all semesters, or an SGPA of 5.7 and 5.2, respectively.

Applicants must be 28 years or younger as of October 30, 2025, and should have strong verbal and written communication skills in English and at least one regional language (including Hindi) mandatorily.

The internship is a full-time opportunity designed to be an enriching experience in public health communications. Intern will closely work with the Nodal Communications Officers of their assigned ICMR institute in designing communications campaigns for bettering the health of the country within the ambit of the Institute’s health research.

Based on the research work done by the institute, intern will support community engagement research and programmes as required by the institute.

He/she will develop information and education campaign (IEC) materials, social media graphics and media collaterals, including first drafts of press releases and opinion-editorials for information dissemination.  Supporting the institute in conducting webinars/lectures/workshops. The intern will develop and present a capstone project on health communications to ICMR and at the end of the programme, submit a detailed report on the work carried out to ICMR.
