GMP compliance drives cleaning, hygiene solutions market in India: Unmesh Patil

Cleaning and hygiene solutions market in the pharmaceutical industry in the country is experiencing strong growth, driven by India’s position as a global pharmaceutical hub and increasingly stringent domestic and international GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) norms, informs Unmesh Subhash Patil, general manager- Professional, Kärcher India.

He further adds that there is a noticeable shift from traditional, manual cleaning to validated, high-performance mechanical and automated solutions to ensure product quality and safety in the pharma industry.

Adoption is highly varied. Tier-1 export-focused companies exhibit high technology adoption, including advanced industrial vacuums (M and H class, ATEX certified), duct cleaning equipment and automated floor care. However, many smaller and mid-sized players still rely on older, less efficient methods, indicating a significant technology gap that needs to be addressed for universal compliance.

“The untapped market potential is substantial in the pharma industry. While leading pharma players are adopting advanced solutions, the sheer volume of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) struggling with outdated cleaning methods represents a large, unorganized segment. This demand is further amplified by continuous capacity expansion in the sector,” Patil informs.

Patil further explains that pharma manufacturing units offer the strongest immediate growth, specifically in production and packaging areas, due to the direct impact of cleaning on product quality and regulatory audits. R&D Labs also present a key niche for high-precision, low-volume cleaning solutions, while modern warehouses drive demand for automated floor care to maintain a compliant infrastructure.

Kärcher India brings specialized filtration technology like HEPA filters in vacuums to control airborne particles. Its high pressure washing systems offer effective cleaning of vessels, blenders, duct etc and dry ice blasting for residue-free cleaning of sensitive machinery, and steam cleaning for validated disinfection without chemicals. This focus supports critical GMP requirements.

Its model is built on being a Total System Provider. This includes consultative selling, offering a complete system of perfectly matched machines, accessories, cleaning agents, and comprehensive services. It also provides application advice, technical training, leasing/rental options, and maintenance packages to ensure solutions are integrated efficiently and sustainably into the client's operation.

Steam cleaning provides hygienic disinfection without chemical residue, crucial for sterility. Industrial vacuums with advanced filtration ensure precision in removing fine, hazardous dust and preventing cross-contamination in pharma manufacturing. Automation (e.g., robotic scrubbers) ensures consistent, validated cleaning cycles, minimizing human error and reducing risk.

Giving an overview of the market, Patil informs that the organized market, led by global experts like Kärcher, focuses on compliant, high-performance, validated systems with full service support. The unorganized market is dominated by commodity equipment, manual processes, and non-certified solutions, leading to inconsistent results and higher compliance risks. Unorganised players compete mainly on low upfront pricing. However, they pose a significant threat to quality and compliance. Their solutions often lack the necessary filtration, validation, and durability, leading to higher long-term operating costs, increased manual effort, and critical regulatory non-compliance.

Talking about the challenges, he says that primary challenges include initial capital investment, particularly for SMEs, and the need for specialized training for operators on advanced equipment. Furthermore, there's often a mindset barrier, viewing cleaning as a cost centre rather than an essential compliance and efficiency driver. The primary barriers are not regulatory but perception and infrastructure. While regulations strongly encourage compliance, the lack of immediate, strict enforcement across all segments allows unorganized solutions to persist. Infrastructure challenges often involve space constraints and power stability for advanced machinery.

“Stricter hygiene norms and the focus on export incentives have significantly influenced demand. To compete globally and pass international audits, Indian pharma companies must meet global quality standards, directly increasing the need for validated, advanced cleaning systems that comply with international GMP,” Patil concludes.
