India in 2026 will work to advance integrated, tech-enabled healthcare with focus on mental wellbeing

Indian healthcare sector in 2026 stands at a pivotal moment, marked by the convergence of digital innovation, policy reforms, and a growing recognition of mental wellbeing as integral to overall health.

In 2025, the healthcare industry did see a turning point as far as innovation and resilience were concerned, due to the advancement in technology and the increased awareness of holistic care requirements. The year was marked by rapid integration of digital tools and personalised medicine, although there were significant gaps in access and infrastructure, which was a serious obstacle, particularly in India. Mental healthcare especially became a critical area, and the models that have been developed in mental healthcare have shifted from the models focused on crisis response to models focused on continuity and integration, said Dr Jothi Neeraja, founder, chairperson, and managing director, People Tree Hospitals and Maarga Mind Care.

In India, the increasing mental health burden, which affects approximately one in every seven individuals and is more prevalent in urban than rural regions, indicated its status as a mainstream workforce and societal issue rather than a niche topic. Psychiatry, psychology, counselling, and rehabilitation offered in one facility as integrated mental health ecosystems became popular, treating age groups holistically. This move addressed the demand for clinical rigor and long-term care models, similar to other medical specialties, shifting away from episodic interventions, she added.

But the difficulties and challenges in the field of mental healthcare in 2025 were stark. The treatment gap for mental disorders remained alarmingly high, with over 80% of affected individuals not receiving timely or adequate care, and stigma and socioeconomic status only worsened the situation.

There were infrastructure limitations like shortage of psychiatric beds distributed unequally over the country. Moreover, the increasing levels of chronic disease and high figures of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) due to depression and anxiety burdened the resources. Clinician and patient dissatisfaction reached a boiling point with skyrocketing prices, denials, and commoditisation of the workforce, reportedly resulting in demands to improve working conditions of mental health professionals to fight shortages of talent, she noted.

But, there is optimism for more gradual improvement in 2026. Artificial intelligence can automate administrative functions in therapy and scheduling, to free clinicians and minimise burnout. Virtual and augmented reality will improve mental health therapies, providing immersive exposure to anxiety, PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), and phobias, increasing accessibility and customisation, said Dr Neeraja.

Privatization of investment in India will support infrastructure to increase capacity and quality at scale, to place evidence-based, patient-centred models that focus on dignity and long-term outcomes. The process of reducing stigma and enhancing accessibility among various demographics will speed up, helping reduce the treatment gap by tele-counselling and community clinics. The non-traditional care model, like wellness and lifestyle medicine, will be mainstreamed, complementing mental health with preventive biohacking and quantified self-approaches, she said.

However, AI adoption may hit speed bumps due to legacy processes, and legislative activity might yield little substantive change in the face of political challenges. Health equity could resurge, addressing high-needs populations, while India's healthcare costs are projected to rise, driven by chronic issues, including mental illnesses.

Overall, 2026 promises a more integrated, tech-enabled healthcare ecosystem, with mental health at the forefront through supportive professional environments and personalised pathways, added Dr Neeraja.
