Needle-free drug delivery is moving from a promising innovation to an expected standard. As patients look for comfort, ease of use, and more control over their treatments, the appetite for needle-free options has surged.  In India as well, this movement is gaining momentum, with healthcare providers recognizing technologies that improve patient experience and support stronger treatment adherence, said Sarvesh Mutha, managing director, IntegriMedical.

While needle-based vaccination has been the norm for decades, advancements in needle-free systems are steadily changing the landscape, particularly as more therapies today require regular injections. The impact is visible across paediatric and adult vaccination, IVF and women’s health, growth hormone therapy, and select pain-management protocols.  For the pharmaceutical industry, this transition opens up substantial opportunities. Innovation now goes beyond drug formulation to include how the therapy is delivered, said Mutha.

As needle-free injections gain wider acceptance, the pharma sector has the opportunity to reshape care with a greater focus on comfort, safety, and user experience for both patients and healthcare professionals. This shift signals a pivotal moment for the country’s healthcare ecosystem, opening the door for broader adoption of patient-centric drug delivery platforms, he said.

In fact, needle free injection system provides a substantial opportunity for pharmaceutical companies, particularly those that prioritize patient safety and delivery efficiency. Needle-free systems fit naturally with companies working on vaccines, biologics, or regular-dose injectables. Co-packaging with needle-free drug delivery system enables pharma companies to deliver integrated solutions, while simplifying logistics and reducing sharps waste. Early collaboration ensures drug-device compatibility and accelerates regulatory approvals, making these partnerships vital for market adoption and global health initiatives, Mutha said.

Adopting needle-free cartridge delivery gives pharma a decisive competitive edge. It elevates the patient experience, reinforces brand trust, and protects healthcare workers by eliminating needle-related risks.  Alongside clear clinical and operational gains, co-packaging therapies with needle-free cartridges positions brands at the forefront of innovation, leveraging advanced drug delivery that prioritizes patient comfort and protects healthcare workers.

There are environmental and operational gains. With no needles involved, toxic sharps waste is eliminated, reducing both environmental impact and handling risks. The technology also brings long-term cost efficiency, as the device can deliver thousands of injections and comes with a durability warranty of up to 10,000 shots. Additionally, disposal becomes simpler and more affordable, since used cartridges can be processed through standard plastic-waste streams without the need for specialized biohazard management, said Mutha.
