Surgical equipment imports grow 10.2% in first eight months of FY 2025-26

Imports of surgical equipment to the country have reported a growth of 10.2% even as the imports for the month of November, 2025 was around 4.25%, on a Year-on-Year (YoY) basis. For the first eight months of the current fiscal, exports registered almost 4.5% growth compared to the same period a year ago.

The imports of surgicals during April to November, 2025 stood at $943.19 million, as compared to $856.62 million in the period of last year. In rupee terms, the imports grew 14.34% during the period, to Rs. 8,204.17 crore, as compared to Rs. 7,175.23 crore reported during the eight months, last year, according to data from the ministry of commerce and industry.

During the month of November, imports grew 4.25% to $113.34 million as against $108.72 million in the same month of previous fiscal year. In rupee terms, the imports registered 9.8% growth during the month, at Rs. 1,006.79 crore, as compared to Rs. 917.23 crore reported a year ago.

Exports, on the other hand, during the eight months ended November, 2025, grew 4.45% to $507.32 million, as compared to $485.68 million on a YoY basis. In rupee terms, this was a growth of 8.5%, at Rs. 4,413.86 crore compared to Rs. 4,067.77 crore during same period a year ago.

Exports during the month of November was $65.29 million, as compared to $56.8 million in the same month last year, with around 15% growth. In rupee terms, the exports registered a 21% growth at Rs. 579.92 crore, as compared to Rs. 479.2 crore during the corresponding month of 2024.

India's medical devices trade with overseas nations has been reporting higher imports for several years and the government has been working on various schemes and support policies to help improve manufacturing medical devices including surgicals in the country.

According to a report by the iMarc Group, the Indian general surgical devices market was at $572.01 million in 2024, which it expects to reach at $1.13 billion by 2023, owing to advancements in minimally invasive surgical techniques, increased healthcare infrastructure investments, government initiatives like 'Make in India' promoting domestic device manufacturing, rising surgical procedures due to lifestyle diseases, and the adoption of robotic and power-assisted surgical tools.
