The global healthcare landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, marked by a rising preference for integrative medicine and natural therapies. Among these, Ayurveda has emerged as a key driver of this shift, supported by increasing consumer awareness of preventive healthcare and a growing demand for clean-label, plant-based products, said Dr Nagaraj Kamath, Associate Professor & Pro-Head, Department of Kriya Sharir, SDM College of Ayurveda & Hospital, Hassan.
The Ayurveda industry is witnessing robust global growth, with projections estimating the market to reach nearly $30 billion by 2032. This expansion is fuelled by lifestyle disorders, chronic diseases, and the limitations of purely symptomatic treatments, prompting individuals to seek holistic and sustainable health solutions.
Ayurveda’s personalized approach, emphasis on balance, and time-tested formulations resonate strongly with modern healthcare needs, especially in areas such as immunity, mental wellness, and metabolic disorders. Additionally, global acceptance of herbal supplements, nutraceuticals, and wellness products has further strengthened Ayurveda’s presence in international markets, he added.
“Our country holds a unique advantage in this global movement, primarily due to its structured policy support through the Ministry of Ayush. As the only country with a dedicated ministry for traditional systems of medicine, India has taken significant steps to mainstream Ayurveda through regulatory frameworks, research funding, standardization initiatives, and international collaborations. Government-led efforts such as global Ayush missions, integration of Ayurveda into public health systems, and promotion of wellness tourism have enhanced the credibility and accessibility of traditional medicine. This policy push not only strengthens domestic healthcare delivery but also positions India as a global leader in integrative medicine. By aligning traditional knowledge with modern scientific validation and quality assurance, India is creating a strong foundation for Ayurveda to compete in regulated global markets,” Dr Kamath, told Pharmabiz in an email.
A critical aspect of sustaining this growth lies in leveraging India’s rich herbal heritage through a phyto-pharmaceutical approach for next-generation drug discovery. Here SDM College of Ayurveda & Hospital is playing a pivotal role in bridging traditional wisdom with contemporary scientific research. By incorporating interdisciplinary training, research-oriented curricula, and industry collaborations, SDM is preparing students to contribute to evidence-based Ayurveda and phyto-pharmaceutical development. Focus areas include standardization of herbal extracts, clinical validation, bioactive compound isolation, and translational research, said Dr Kamath.
