A two-day workshop organized by the Library & Publication Division of Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), Ghaziabad, highlighted the growing importance of high-quality scientific evidence and the integration of AI tools in advancing research and publication in pharmacopoeial science and pharmacovigilance.

The workshop titled “Enhancing Scientific Publications in Pharmacopoeial Science and Pharmacovigilance” witnessed participation from approximately 80 experts, academicians, researchers from leading institutions across the country, along with IPC officials.

While delivering his keynote address, Prof. Balram Bhargava, former director general (DG) of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) highlighted the critical role of high-quality scientific evidence, ethical research practices and robust pharmacovigilance systems in strengthening public health and regulatory confidence.

Dr V Kalaiselvan, secretary-cum-scientific director, IPC, highlighted the pivotal role and responsibilities of IPC in ensuring drug quality standards, promoting pharmacovigilance activities, and supporting regulatory systems for safeguarding public health.

The workshop featured a series of focused sessions covering key themes such as the use of AI tools to enhance research writing and improve the quality of scientific publications, and the application of statistical techniques for evidence-based research. Experts also explored the impact of pharmacopoeial impurities through clinical case studies, emphasizing their relevance to drug safety and efficacy.

The workshop featured eight distinguished experts who delivered insightful and interactive scientific sessions.

Dr. Sudhir Chandra Sarangi, additional professor, Department of Pharmacology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, session on “Safety of Drug Therapy in Chronic Disease: Case Study in Epilepsy” emphasized the long-term safety evaluation of antiepileptic drugs, focusing on adverse effects, drug interactions, therapeutic monitoring, and risk management strategies to ensure safe and effective treatment in chronic diseases.

Dr. Ravi Shah, professor & head, Department of Pharmaceutical Analysis, National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Ahmedabad, session on “Data Integrity and Digital Documentation in Pharmacopoeia Publication” highlighted the importance of maintaining accurate, secure, and traceable digital records to uphold reliability, transparency, and regulatory compliance in pharmacopoeial standards.

Dr Margam Madhusudhan, professor, Department of Library and Information Science, University of Delhi, session on “AI Tools for Improving Research Writing and Scientific Publication Quality” explored the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance clarity, grammar, structure, plagiarism detection, data analysis, and overall manuscript quality for improved publication outcomes.

Dr Dharmendra Kumar Yadav, assistant professor & head, Department of Statistics & Demography, National Institute of Health and Family Welfare, session on “Statistical Techniques for Evidence-Based Research in Pharmacopoeial Science and Pharmacovigilance” emphasized the application of appropriate statistical methodologies to ensure accuracy, reliability, and scientific validity in drug standardization and safety monitoring.

Dr Sameer Dhingra, associate professor and head, Pharmacy Practice, National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Hajipur, delivered a session on “Impact of Pharmacopoeial Impurities: Clinical Case Studies”. The discussion bridged pharmacopoeial science with real-world clinical practice, illustrating how seemingly minor impurities can pose significant patient safety risks.

Dr Chetna Desai, professor and head, Department of Pharmacology, B. J. Medical College, Ahmedabad, spoke on “Evidence-Based Research and Scientific Publications Guiding Safety and Clinical Confidence.” She underscored the importance of generating and disseminating high-quality scientific evidence to support the safe, effective, and rational use of medicines. Prof. Desai also talked about the PvPI & MvPI functioning by the IPC.

Dr Ravi Tomar, assistant professor, Department of Chemistry, SRM Institute of Science and Technology Delhi-NCR Campus, session on “Role of Research, Innovation & Publications in Pharmaceutical Chemistry” highlighted the discovery and development of safer, more effective drug molecules, advanced analytical techniques, and the role of scientific publications in supporting regulatory standards and continuous advancement in pharmaceutical sciences.

Saurabh Sahoo, Pharmacopoeia proof reader, IPC, conducted a practical session on “Smart Cover Letter Writing for Submission to Scientific Journals.” He emphasized drafting clear, concise, and persuasive cover letters that effectively communicate novelty, significance, ethical compliance, and relevance to the journal’s scope, thereby enhancing editorial consideration.

Collectively, the workshop aimed to strengthen scientific writing skills, promote ethical publication practices, and ensure data integrity.
