India-EU FTA (European Union Free Trade Agreement) will provide impetus to Indian Ayush sector. The EU with its 27 member states has emerged as an important importer of herbs, plant-based extracts and traditional medicines creating substantial export opportunities for Indian Ayush industry.
The agreement as per the FAQ's documents shared by the ministry of commerce & industry facilitates greater integration of Indian Ayush products into European value chains, improves regulatory cooperation and boost investments in the sector. With growing consumer preference in Europe for natural and holistic wellness solutions, the FTA is poised to strengthen India’s position as a global supplier of traditional medicines and wellness products. According to industry observers, Ministry of Ayush now should provide more details of the FTA to the sector.
This EU FTA unveiled early this year provides a major boost to the Indian Ayush sector by recognizing traditional medicine services. It enables practitioners with accredited Indian qualifications to offer their services in EU member states and will establish a clear framework for setting up Ayush wellness centers and clinics across Europe. Ayush industry and Ayurveda physicians need to put efforts to give it practical implementation of EU FTA, said Dr DBA Narayana, CSO, Ayurvidye Trust.
The commitments taken on practice of Indian Traditional Medicines will be helpful. In EU Member States where regulations do not exist, Ayush practitioners will be able to provide their services using the professional qualifications they gain in India after details of the provisions are out. The FTA also provides future certainty and locks in the openness of EU for establishment of Ayush wellness centres and clinics in the European Member States. The FTA also envisages greater exchange with EU to facilitate trade in Indian Traditional Medicine services, added Dr Narayana who was in Denmark for discussion with Manish Prabhat, Ambassador of India to Kingdom of Denmark.
According to Dr Narayana, the Ambassador Prabhat too noted the India-EU FTA as a historic step and the government of India and all Ministries that have worked out to get the same agreed needs appreciation.
Ayush physicians and Industry needs to put efforts to give it practical implementation. Working out the modalities, finding business partners who can invest for these in EU nations, setting up joint businesses and agreeing about delivery of quality services and products needs great attention to work out details", said the India’s Ambassador to Denmark.
On a concluding note, Dr Narayana said the that this India–EU FTA has the potential to be a transformative development for the Ayush sector, enabling Indian producers to tap into a rapidly expanding European market for herbal and traditional wellness products. By enhancing market access, fostering regulatory alignment and encouraging trade and investment flows, the agreement could strengthen the global footprint of Indian Ayush products while contributing to the sector’s growth, innovation and export competitiveness.
