 The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM), the statutory body regulating the education and practice of the Indian Systems of Medicines in the country, has said that it would accept and consider applications for new Ayurveda Under Graduate (UG) Medical Colleges with intake capacity of 60 seats per year from Academic Session 2026-27.
The announcement follows representation from various stakeholders seeking retention of the provision for establishment of Ayurveda undergraduate medical colleges with an intake capacity of 60 seats, citing the need for wider accessibility, regional equity, institutional viability, and promotion of Ayurveda education.
The matter was taken up for discussion in the Commission's meeting recently and it has taken favourable decision in this connection.
"Applications for establishment of new Ayurveda Undergraduate Medical Colleges with an intake capacity of 60 seats per year shall be accepted and considered from the Academic Session 2026–27 onwards, subject to fulfillment of the prescribed requirements and applicable statutory provisions," said the Commission.
According to the Section 58(1) of the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (Minimum essential standards, assessment and rating for undergraduate Ayurveda colleges and attached teaching hospitals) Regulations, 2024, the application for establishment of a new Ayurveda undergraduate medical college shall be for the intake capacity of one hundred, one hundred fifty and two hundred seats per year.
The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (Minimum essential standards, assessment and rating for undergraduate Ayurveda colleges and attached teaching hospitals) Regulations, 2024 has detail requirement for existing 60 seats institutions. The same shall be applicable while processing the new proposals for 60 seats, it said.
The Medical Assessment and Rating Board of Indian System of Medicine, NCISM shall process and evaluate such applications in accordance with the above criteria and other applicable provisions of the relevant Acts, Rules, Regulations and guidelines issued by the Commission or Medical Assessment and Rating Board of Indian System of Medicine, NCISM from time to time.
The Board shall collect applications and processing fees, FSD, etc. as shall be notified by the Commission. This order shall come into force with immediate effect and shall remain operative until incorporation of the aforesaid provisions through amendment in the relevant Gazette Notification or regulations.
