In July this year, surging monsoon activity across the country brought a significant operational turnaround for traditional acute care categories, breaking a prolonged cycle of sluggish retail volume growth, according to the latest monthly market audit by IQVIA. Widespread rainfall and accompanying seasonal spikes in upper respiratory infections and environmental allergies triggered a sudden footfall surge across retail pharmacies nationwide, driving primary care prescription volumes to multi-quarter highs. Anti-infectives and respiratory care led the seasonal uptick following a quiet first quarter. Antihistamines and cough-and-cold formulations experienced strong prescribing momentum, while anti-infectives generated over Rs. 2,470 crore in monthly sales with a positive 4.1 per cent value expansion. In contrast, mature mass-market categories like gastrointestinal (GI) and pain management presented a mixed trajectory. While pain management therapies benefited from monsoon-related acute presentations, GI formulations trailed overall market growth amid shifting prescription patterns and ongoing regulatory scrutiny around fixed-dose combinations. An analysis of overall market mechanics reveals that price adjustments and product mix continue to outweigh unit volume expansion. Price increases allowed under regulatory guidelines and higher penetration of premium formulations contributed over 60 per cent to overall growth, while pure volume gains remained in low single digits. Chronic therapies, which command over 55 per cent of total market value, maintained a stable, non-seasonal 15.7 per cent MAT growth rate supported by long-term treatment compliance and lifestyle disease burdens. In contrast, acute categories remain tied to erratic weather shifts and seasonal epidemic patterns, making their volume momentum far harder to sustain consistently across all four quarters. Industry analysts expect acute therapy volumes to depend heavily on the geographic progression and longevity of the late monsoon through August. A sustained wet spell could offer extended short-term revenue support to domestic manufacturers heavily anchored in primary care and mass-market anti-infective portfolios. However, long-term corporate valuation and margin stability will continue to lean toward companies aggressively expanding their chronic and specialty footprints.
