Following the launch of its nationwide citizen movement for the early detection and timely treatment of head and neck cancer, the Head & Neck Cancer Institute of India (HNCII) has taken its first on-ground step towards translating the campaign’s vision into action. As part of this effort, Dr. Sultan A. Pradhan, founder & chairman, HNCII, led a two-day engagement in Gorakhpur on August 22–23, bringing together local healthcare professionals and stakeholders to strengthen access to quality and timely cancer care in underserved regions of Eastern Uttar Pradesh. The engagement brought together like minded partners, healthcare practitioners and social service organisations, to discuss the challenges faced by patients in accessing cancer care and explore ways to strengthen the regional cancer-care ecosystem. The discussions focused on early detection, capacity building and collaborative models of care, with an emphasis on strengthening local medical networks and enabling patients to access specialist expertise closer to home. The Gorakhpur engagement marks the first step in HNCII’s larger effort to build stronger pathways for cancer care by connecting specialist expertise with local healthcare providers and community stakeholders. Further initiatives and collaborations will build on this foundation in the coming months. Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Sultan A. Pradhan, founder & chairman, HNCII, said, “Quality cancer care should not be determined by geography. Patients in smaller cities and underserved regions deserve access to the right expertise, timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment without having to bear the additional burden of travelling far from home. Through this initiative, we aim to build stronger connections between specialist expertise and local healthcare systems. Gorakhpur is the first step, but the larger vision is to create a sustained network of collaboration that can bring better cancer care closer to more patients across the country.” The initiative will build on the discussions and collaborations established during the Gorakhpur visit, with HNCII working towards further engagements aimed at strengthening regional medical capabilities, encouraging timely diagnosis and improving access to specialist cancer care.
