The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) has announced the nationwide launch of the 6th National Pharmacovigilance Week (NPW) campaign.
Hosted by the National Coordination Centre for Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (NCC-PvPI) in Ghaziabad, the annual campaign will run from September 17 to 23, 2026, aligning with World Patient Safety Day on September 17. The initiative aims to deepen awareness surrounding the reporting of adverse events linked to medical products across India's healthcare ecosystem.
This year's observance centres on the theme, "Promoting Rational Use of Medicines through Pharmacovigilance - A Step Towards Safer Healthcare". According to sources, strengthening adverse drug reaction (ADR) reporting mechanisms is critical to ensuring patient safety and fostering a culture of rational therapeutic practices. Since its inception as a regular national feature under the PvPI in 2021, NPW has served as a central platform for advancing drug safety frameworks.
According to Dr. Kalaiselvan, a high-profile national event will take place on September 21, at BHIM Hall within the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi. The formal gathering will bring together key stakeholders from across the pharmaceutical and public health landscapes. Central to the day's agenda will be the official release of the 7th edition of the National Formulary of India by Anupriya Patel, Union minister of state for health and family welfare, and chemical and fertilisers.
The main event in New Delhi will feature technical deliberations on several critical areas shaping the future of medicine monitoring. Key subjects scheduled for discussion include the patient perspective in pharmacovigilance, vaccine safety monitoring, materiovigilance, and public-private partnerships. Additionally, sessions will explore pharmacovigilance through a regulatory lens to align national surveillance with global standards.
Delegates attending the national event will have access to keynote presentations by pharmacovigilance experts and strategic networking opportunities with regulatory figures. Discussions are structured to provide attendees with actionable strategies for fortifying drug safety systems nationwide. The platform also aims to facilitate new cross-sector collaborations among decision-makers and industry representatives.
Participation for the campaign and the New Delhi event is open to a broad spectrum of professionals, regulators, and academic institutions. Registration is available for pharmacy, Pharm D, MBBS, BDS, and nursing students, alongside research scholars and academic faculty. Representation is also sought from hospitals, medical colleges, nursing institutions, contract research organizations (CROs), drug safety data management firms, and pharmacovigilance software developers.
Further, central and state drug regulators, policymakers, industry professionals from the pharma, biotech, and medical devices sectors, drug safety associations, non-governmental organizations, and healthcare consumers are encouraged to register. E-certificates will be issued to all registered participants following the event, sources informed.
