The benefit-risk ratio of all the drugs manufactured, sold and distributed among patients in every country has to be monitored through the activities of pharmacovigilance (PV) in order to prevent and manage the adverse drug experiences, opined Yagya Prasad Neupane, chairman, Nepal Pharmacy Council, Kathmandu.
Neupane was inaugurating the seminar on ‘pharmacovigilance activities’ organised by Oviya Medsafe Pvt Ltd at Coimbatore recently. The company is offering pharmacovigilance consulting and outsourced drug safety support services to global pharmaceutical companies. Pharmacovigilance is the science of study of adverse drug reactions.
While stressing that PV is an important aspect of public health studies, he said because of the maturing global drug safety regulations the PV outsourcing is growing rapidly. The discipline is getting importance among the health professionals globally due to the understanding of the benefits and risks of medicines and devices.
Moin Don, executive director, PVCON pharmacovigilance consulting and auditing services, Mumbai conducted a workshop titled ‘Pharmacovigilance for Aspiring Professionals’ as part of the seminar.
Dr J Vijay Venkatraman, managing director and CEO of Oviya MedSafe, explained the concepts behind outsourcing of PV activities and the benefits the pharmaceutical companies would get by outsourcing their pharmacovigilance processes rather than keeping them in-house. He said Coimbatore was chosen as the ideal place for starting the company was due to its growing image as a preferred IT city and the excellent pharmaceutical, medical and paramedical institutions functioning in and around the city.
According to K Pandia Rajan, partner of Oviya Medsafe, India’s pharma exports reach around 200 countries in the world including the highly regulated markets of USA and UK. He said the Indian pharmaceutical companies are catching up with their global counterparts in pharmacovigilance by virtue of the emerging new regulations enforced by the government.
Dr L P Thangavelu, honorary president of Indian Medical Association (IMA), Tamil Nadu state branch was felicitated in the function.
