Further to the raid conducted last month in a cattle feed selling store in a village in Thiruvananthapuram district, the enforcement officials at the office of the Assistant Drugs Controller at Thiruvananthapuram unearthed huge stocks of banned veterinary medicines from an agency operating in a village in the district.
According to the ADC, the veterinary drug agent was selling the banned products in large-scale to the milk farmers and cattle growers in the area. The agent was selling the medicines as feed supplement.
P.K. Sreekumar, the ADC at Thiruvananthapuram while speaking to Pharmabiz said huge stocks of feed supplements and poultry sold by GR Agency at Kallambalam were seized from the shop. The seized products valued at Rs.50,000. The banned medicines were manufactured by a Bangalore based company.
The inspecting officers registered cases against the manufacturing company and local distributor.
The seized medicines, Ceprostin Plus 500ml and Ceprostin Plus 100ml contains floucoquinolin group of antibiotics, enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin in addition to Colistin which are coming under the list of antibiotics and other pharmacologically active substances banned for use in the shrimp culture by the Coastal Aquaculture Authority, ministry of agriculture, government of India. The irrational use of these antibiotics results in the development of human pathogens, resistant to such drugs which will pose serious threat to human beings.
The case was registered as per the provisions of D&C Act which warrants an imprisonment for 5 years and fine. The seized items were produced before Judicial First Class Magistrate Court at Attingal.
