The first International Conference on ‘Sickle Cell Disease: Advances in the Management and Prevention’ will be held at the Indian Council of Medical Research - National Institute of Immunohaematology (ICMR-NIIH), Centre for Research Management and Control of Haemoglobinopathies (CRMCH), at Chandrapur in Maharashtra, from October 4 to 6, 2024.

Organized by leading Indian institutions in immunohaematology and haemoglobinopathies, the event promises to be a groundbreaking platform bringing together global experts, researchers, and practitioners to discuss advancements in diagnosis, management, and prevention of sickle cell disease (SCD).

With India's efforts to eliminate SCD by 2047 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this conference aligns with the national strategy to cover 17 states and over 200 districts in tackling this genetic blood disorder. The conference will feature scientific and technical discussions on the epidemiology, therapeutics, newborn screening, and innovative treatments for SCD. Additionally, international speakers, including Dr. Pankaj Qasba, Dr. Santosh Saraf, and Dr. Kalpna Gupta, will share cutting-edge research and insights.

The conference will also host a pre-conference workshop on the Laboratory and Prenatal Diagnosis of Sickle Cell Disease on October 4th, aimed at medical officers, technicians, and public health professionals. Registration is mandatory, and the event offers a chance to engage with global and national leaders in the field.

Abstract submissions for oral and poster presentations are open until August 30, with cash prizes awarded to the top submissions.

The ICMR-NIIH is a premier research institute based in Mumbai, India, under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Founded in 1957 as the Blood Group Reference Centre, it was later renamed the Institute of Immunohaematology in 1982 and is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The institute focuses on haematology, immunology, and immunohaematology, with cutting-edge research in immuno-haematological disorders such as sickle cell disease (SCD). NIIH is committed to promoting cost-effective research, developing affordable diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, and providing training and capacity-building in underserved regions of India. With collaborations both nationally and internationally, NIIH continues to lead in providing innovative research and management solutions for SCD and other haemoglobinopathies.

CRMCH, located in Chandrapur, Maharashtra, is an advanced research center established by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Operating under the aegis of ICMR-National Institute of Immunohaematology (NIIH), Mumbai, the CRMCH focuses on the management, control, and research of haemoglobinopathies, particularly Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), which poses a significant health burden in the Vidarbha region of Central India.

The center is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for treatment, research, prenatal diagnosis, and biobanking, aiming to develop effective strategies for the prevention and management of SCD. CRMCH also works to build capacity in local medical institutions and provides education, training, and translational research in the field, contributing to national efforts to manage and control SCD in India.
